Very Big Big Big Problem

Ok for some reason the cable to pop open the hood frist snapped on the interior side where u pull the lever. so i was pulling the cable from the outside for a couple of days since my front bumper wasnt installed. with my luck now the cable came off the lever on the chassis. now i have no way of opening my hood. what the hell do i do. i cant reach it inside. what would you do

DamonB 01-10-06 02:13 PM

search for "broken hood release"

recon fd 01-10-06 03:35 PM

WOW that sucks. I dont know what I would do if that happened to me. Maybe I would find a nice corner and cry myself to sleep! haha

goodluck,
-josh

P.s. DO the search above. It comes up with good info.

rynberg 01-10-06 04:39 PM

Jeesh, just run a search. It's happened to many of us and there are good write-ups on here -- you can look under my username or damonb, it's happened to both of us.

HobbeZ 01-10-06 04:41 PM

coat hanger.. it's a tad scary how easy it is

Preventive Maintenance...

Guess, I've read one too many stories about the release cable breaking. Figured it was the case of not "if" but, "when" mine will break as well.

so, since I really do not like the idea of prying on my glass front end/hood combo....

just went out to the car and in 10 minutes looped a flex wire around the release lever and ran the wire out to the driver side wheel well. I would only have to remove the plastic wheel well cover now to access the end of the wire to pull on it and release the hood latch. Tried it, works just fine and just about invisible.

Sometimes a bit of preventive maintenance goes a long way to eliminate lots of frustration later.

recon fd 01-11-06 02:14 PM

^THATS A GREAT IDEA!!!!!! I am going to do that tonight.

thanks for the info,
-josh

Wow, I can't believe your reaction to his post. After reading your thread, it seems like you reacted the same way he did... I guess you were glad then no one reacted to you this way.

Hardly. I didn't act or title my thread like it was the end of the world. Unlike this guy, I actually spent the time searching and reading about what people had done BEFORE starting a thread of my own. Of the two methods I found, one was impossible on my stock car, and the other one had a risk of damaging the paint on the bumper. I simply asked if anyone knew of any other way. I then tried the 2nd method and it worked.

Now how did I react the same way? The problem is everyone on here these days expects everything to be spoon-fed to them. Heaven forbid that someone spend 10 minutes trying to figure out something on their own....

You feel because of his title he's acting like it's the end of the world? Obviously you have been overlooking a lot of threads that the title over-dramatize the content.

It's called learning... everyone has to do it in whichever way they can comprehend it best. Some learn through trial and error, some through investigation, while others who are not "equiped" to go those routes, handle it in whatever way they know best. So then it is up to us, the ones in the know, to "teach" and not criticize. "He who knows not and knows that he knows not is a child. Teach him" - Omar Khayam, 13th century philosopher

No it's not, it's called being too damn lazy to spend 10 minutes searching for an answer.....besides I'm teaching him something -- to think and do something for himself instead of having to be spoon-fed. How is sitting around waiting for someone to give you an answer, that could have been found in less than 10 minutes, learning anything?

We're not talking about some complicated ignition or fuel problem here....

Ummm, so you're not helping him to solve his issue, you're wasting time teaching him to fend for himself? You're not his parents so why should you care.

And being able to open your hood in a time of need is not a BIG problem? Just so you know, you are WRONG if you feel that this is an insignificant issue. Example... my cousin was driving one of his dad's cars and pulled into a gas station to get gas. While he was pumping the gas he noticed smoke coming from under the hood. So he goes to pop the hood but my uncle forgot to tell him that the cable was broke and the only way to open it was from under the car. The smoke gets worse and a few seconds later flames lick from the cowl area. Keep in mind, the car is next to a gas pump. No way to put out the fire since he had no idea how to open the hood.

gotorx7 01-11-06 07:55 PM

I'm 100% with Rynberg on this one.

And while we're here :) a title that bore even the slightest semblance of identifying the actual problem should be common sense, surely?

I told him to search using my username. If you search using "hood release" and my username, you get like 5 threads, all of which have the method to open the hood. How is that not helping? I certainly helped the guy more than either of you.

BTW, I respect Kyle (Mahjik) immensely. We simply have a different viewpoint on certain aspects of moderation....if anyone feels I have treated them unfairly, they are free to PM me. :)

Glad to hear it, it's quite a relief to get it back open.

After reading the methods from the search, my hood would still be latched because I would not feel comfortable shoving a screwdriver and prying up the hood. So in this case the search feature would be useless.

So I guess your little "jeesh" was to enhance all your help? I wasn't trying to help him, I have no expertise in opening an RX-7 hood with a broken latch. But it seems those that do/did offered very little as far as "help".

You can bring a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Here's the first response in the thread:

Doing that search finds these threads:

Hood latch broken?

Help! Hood release doesn't work

Help. Hood latch cord broke @ latch?

Share with us your better method? I can't find it.
