V-Mount Intercooler kit, any interest???

If I could make a V-mount intercooler kit would anyone be interested?? I would start with a large one for a single turbo because thats what i need. But there would be one or two more twin turbo set ups as i get time. and as the battery goes i would make a relocation kit to put it in the storage box behind the passenger seat and could possibly include it in the kit.

Nghtstlkr7 11-13-06 04:56 AM

how much would you charge for a twin turbo set-up? how difficult would it be to convert to single?

im interested because i want/need to upgrade my IC while im still on the twins... but once those are through im gonna go single.

KINETIK_FD3S 11-13-06 06:48 AM

i have been thinking the same thing as a few members have asked me if i can build them one.

T2 Tsunami 11-13-06 09:53 AM

would this kit be complete or would you fab brackets that would work with name brand rads and intercoolers?. I would like to get some brackets, unless your price for everything is reasonable?

White94RX 11-13-06 10:51 AM

Ok, I know what a front-mount and stock-mount is. But what's the V-mount?

skir2222 11-13-06 11:30 AM

lets get a price estimate on it...

To OP, What type of core would you be using in the kit (i.e. Spearco, Ebay, etc.)?

TRISPEEDFD3S 11-13-06 11:59 AM

don't relocate the battery, you should just minimize it by using Jeff's battery tray, so he can also get in on the deal. SO you both make money. He sells to you for a good price, you get a good deal on a battery setup that is small, and works well.

ptrhahn 11-13-06 12:30 PM

I think you'd need to build a kit first and test fit it. I've seen alot of homebrew v-mounts that aren't even really "v-mounts" (just slanted stock mount IC's with no duct), or are otherwise convoluted.

I've been looking into building my own too, and there aloty of considerations once you get into it.

TRISPEEDFD3S 11-13-06 02:50 PM

ptrhahn, you should make one to fit with any aftermarket radiator! Almost like the HKS Vmount, just not so big of an intercooler, with a little bit less of an angle on the intercooler, and more angle on the radiator part, so we wouldn't have to worry too much on ground clearance.

Northern7 11-13-06 03:03 PM

This is a project I would also consider. I was very interested in Kinetik fd3s kit. I just Pm'd him about 2 weeks ago.

ptrhahn 11-13-06 03:04 PM

Nope, i'm going hard-core or nothing. Custom 4-pass, 70mm radiator, custom fans if necessary, no A/C, carbon fiber mounting brackets, fully sealed and ducted.

i hope you were joking or have an assload of money...unless your car is track only...can the stock water pump even handle a 4 pass rad? CF mounting brackets?!, what are you going to save like 3 ounces as opposed to aluminum?

ptrhahn 11-13-06 04:18 PM

The 4-pass, 70mm specs were borrowed from the Knightsports V-mount, which works on an otherwise stock car.

I find it easier to work in CF than alluminum. I've already got a CF PFC commander holder, CF mounts for an IC extention scoop, and a CF catch can bracket.

I've just gotta get the car up in the air after my lat track event, to see what's what...

TRISPEEDFD3S 11-13-06 04:33 PM

Go on boy! Make that damn vmount!

ptrhahn 11-13-06 04:42 PM

HA! no guarantees... I've gotta get the car apart and make sure all of my theories on what will work, and the measurements I have will actually work the way I want them to.

If not, I'm going large stock mount and screw it. The only off the shelf V-mount I'd go with is the Knightsports... I really a cut above, but it's also $3k.

TRISPEEDFD3S 11-13-06 05:02 PM

Yeah I like the knight sports or RE Amemiya, but vmount is so expensive, and I already have a fluidyne. The only mount that would allow me to keep my fluidyne is the HKS setup. Which is about 2,200. My only problem with vmounts is relocaitng the battery. I like where it is. I might just end up going ASP medium.

rynberg 11-13-06 05:07 PM

HKS kit allows for A/C, PS, and keeps a 51R size battery in the engine bay. It also has a divider panel between the IC and rad. It's a pretty damn solid design IMO. Not to mention short piping runs and huge fricking IC core.

TRISPEEDFD3S 11-13-06 05:32 PM

Yes Tyler, should I? Or no? It comes with its own pipe to the throttle body too!

Well, if you are going to go single you are going to want a large intercooler, the prob with putting it on with the stock twins is that you are going to expierience more lag due to pressure drop in your system. you might as well wait until you upgrade, or put it in your closet or something. I plan on making a few different sizes. they should start at around $1,800.00 and go up to $2,800 depending on if you want the battery kit, BOV & flange, polishing, and the size of the intercooler. BUT no promises in price, this is just to see if the interest is there. Dont want to work deals with friends at local shops and have this started if i cant sell them.

The Intercooler would definately be spearco, but not sure on the rad yet. it will be name brand. The brackets will be very well constructed, and i will use mostly stainless hardware.

Here's a better look. Intercooler and rad form a "V". Now do you comprende?

I will consider that if i do it. Give people the option. relocating is very simple to do, not a big deal like a lot of people think.

silverTRD 11-13-06 08:08 PM

im planning on building my own also. i took my front end apart a while back and took a myriad of measurements to plan just for this. ive got a pretty decent design but no money for it at present. oh well in due time.

FDNewbie 11-13-06 08:09 PM

Hey guys. I just saw this thread now. I'm actually already developing a V-mount IC :D I didn't say anything earlier b/c I don't like talking about things until they're done (talk is cheap). But just wanted to give you guys a head's up that the FDNewbie Imports V-mount is already underway, and like everything I sell, it'll meet the highest standards :) (Of course it helps that I've had exposure to most of the high-quality JDM V-mounts ;))
