used tranny....how to tell the year?
 

When looking at a used tranny, is there any way to tell what year car it came out of? Markings, numbers etc.....

The differences between them as I know it are all internal. You won't see those differences until the transmission is fully disassembled.

correct...thats why im trying to see if there is any way to tell the difference on the outside with some kind of marking, without taking it apart.

Reason is a JDM importer may have some used ones, but i want to make sure the year it came out of I.E 99 spec and up.

i highly doubt they are going to let me take it apart before i buy.......

I concur.. :suspect: you must inspect the insides of a tranny to see how old/used she is :suspect:

I wonder if there is come kind of dial that. An be printed off on a sheet of paper and cut a hold out of the center and placed over the output shaft, put in fifth gear, and make one full turn of the input spline.

Since the 5th gear is different, 1 full crank of the input spline should move it less than an original.

Just thinking outloud.

The JDM 93+ trannies had the shorter 5th gear too so that wouldn't help the OP get a 99+ tranny.

Unproven theory, but holds true for a sample of two. Right side of gearbox (main body, not 5th gear or extension housing) "ring" casting with circle cut in two, upper half holds a number............year
lower half, series of raised tits......month, as per trim dating methods?

You can tell 5th gear options counting the speedo sender gear teeth, either 22 or 24, at least for non-export market.
