Unorthodox Full Pulley Set

Ok I really want to do this mod but I have heard that it will drain your battery. Any of you guys have the Unorthodox Full Pulley Set and think that it would be ok for me to put it on.

Thanks

MakeShift 06-13-02 02:06 AM

Come on I really would like to know, I dont want to do it if it is going to drain me.

FourtyOunce 06-13-02 03:59 AM

doent drain your battery, but doesnt allow the alternator to fully charge it since it is being under driven. to my knowledge, the only pulley in the unorthodox pulley set that is actually of different size is the main crank. everything else is about the same size.

Brede 06-13-02 04:25 AM

Thats right! I installed my set in the beginning of May and I have had no problems with it so far.
Just be sure you know what you're doing when installing the eccentric shaft main pulley!!

MakeShift 06-13-02 04:46 AM

ok so you think that I wont have a problem with the battery being drained to the point that I can not start the car. Or should I just save some money and get the single Race main drive pulley?

Trexthe3rd 06-13-02 08:59 AM

The battery will have no problems, like Brede said it's the installation of the main e-shaft pulley that need to be worried about. I have mine for two years now and had no problems what so ever.

MakeShift 06-13-02 11:13 AM

Ok it is a go

MakeShift 06-13-02 11:14 AM

What kind of power gains have you seen out of this.

TomsRX7 12-03-02 11:54 PM

Bump... I've had my full Unorthodox pulley set for over a year AND I'm running a huge amp for my stereo system and I've had no problems at all.

Does ths mean that people are underdriving their waterpumps as well? Is that a good idea on an engine with the kind of heat issues that FDs have?

sszablya 12-04-02 11:32 AM

it's not terrible.

The pulley can slow the pump back down, so it's still efficient @ high RPM.

Tomco78 12-04-02 11:39 AM

Underdriving the waterpump on an FD can actually be a good thing!
This reduces waterpump speed at high RPMs, reducing/preventing cavitation (forming of air-bubbles).
The downside is that you might have to rev it up in stop-and-go traffic on a very hot day, or the pump may not be able to deliver enough water.

Scrub 12-04-02 12:22 PM

What do I have to worry about when installing the eccentric shaft pully?

sszablya 12-04-02 03:03 PM

It is just a PITA. And you really need to make sure it's on properly, otherwise it can loosen and slide off, and then bye-bye fluid circulation/alternator/pwr steering/air cond.

Tomco78 12-04-02 03:17 PM

You HAVE to keep preassure on the shaft while loosening the bolt! Otherwise the front needlebearing might fall out of position. If it does it will be jammed when you reinstall the bolt and it will be crushed and end up in your oil!
I would not install this pulley if I had the engine in the car, it's just to damn difficult to know if that needle bearing is still in place when you but the bolt back in..

TomsRX7 12-05-02 12:04 AM

In regards to sszablya's comments, I have never heard of anyone having their main pulley bolt come loose- that thing is huge with a very large contact area on the seat of the head.

Tomco78, you are right on. I have the Unorthodox pulley set and the only reason I went for it was because I had the motor out of the car.

I would recommend that whoever is considering the pulley upgrade, go with a brand that does not require the base part to be removed. However, when you finally do take out the motor (and that day will come :D) then the Unorthodox is BY FAR the best choice. It's such a bitchin piece.

Just my $.02

So can the pully set be installed on an engine in the car? or does it have to be removed... I currently have the radiator and IC out (changing the radiator) so I have pretty good access to all the pullys....or is it more of a needlebearing concern? Is there any way to make sure the needlebearing is set properly? (without removing the engine)
Thanks!

puma 12-05-02 08:10 PM

yeah and does any belt comes with it?

what size belt do you need if you remove the air pump?

Will the greddy one fit?

what have you guys used?

TomsRX7 12-05-02 08:34 PM

With the Unorthodox full pulley set, it does not come with any belts. However, their instruction sheet tells you exactly the belts to get. They are standard, common belts that are available at any parts store.

As for installing the Unorthodox main pulley, it is NOT an access issue, so even if you have your whole front end dis-assembled, that's not going to help. The problem is as soon as you take off the stock pulley, the flat needle bearing can easily fall out of place. I believe Max Cooper gave a link to Mazdatrix with pictures of it.

However, yes, if you really want, you can install the Unorthodox pulley with the engine in the car. You just have to make very sure that the eccentric shaft is wedged forward with plenty of pressure. The method of doing this is by pressing the flywheel forward by shoving a wooden stick or similar through the view panel or maybe even the starter hole (obviously, you have to take out the starter first). :D

I found the page that does a wonderful job at describing about the bearing and showing pictures.

jr 12-06-02 12:18 PM

Here's another page that show's the damage that can be done from a bad install and how to fix it.

http://reganrotaryracing.tripod.com/unxhoror.htm

They don't go into how to prevent it though. Mazdatrix seems to act like it's not that big of a deal, just wedge in some wood against the flywheel to keep the pressure there, but I've heard it's not that easy. I've been told by reputable mechanics that they'd rather just install this pulley when the engine's out.

coop 12-06-02 01:35 PM

Why is it easier with the engine out? Because it is easier to lock the shaft forward to pin the bearing?

jr 12-06-02 01:41 PM

Yeah, they stand the engine on the flywheel so they know it's not going anywhere.

It really is that easy. 7-sins and i just put a new main pully hub on his and it was a breeze. He crawled under and held the flywheel with a pry bar and me and a friend pulled it off. put some lock tight on it and put the new one on and torqed to 190lbs put the car back togeather the next day and it runs like a champ. Not to big of a deal to me atleast. Just dont fuck it up.

TomsRX7 12-06-02 02:26 PM

Yep, I agree. If you KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, then it is a piece of cake; it's no big deal. It's just the people who fail to read and have no idea what the heck they are doing that screw it up and then say "oh, it's a nightmare. I would NOT recommend doing......"
