universal catalytic converter
 

Hi guys,

Just bought an FD and trying to get it smogged in CA. My mechanic recommends going with a stock exhaust setup minus the precat. The cat I have on has been modified and I need to buy a new one. At the dealership, it's $2000! That's 4x a performance setup. Someone said I might be able to use a universal cat. Is this true?

Anybody have a stock cat they want to sell me?

Bolt-on a high flow cat like this one: http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/highflowfd3s.htm I believe it is CA approved.

don't i have to upgrade the ecu, though, if I get a high flow cat? that's what i've read.

Nope. I ran the Bonez Hi-Flo cat for a few years. IMO, one of the best cats out there you can buy. I know it used to have a CARB number so it was very popular mod for the Cali guys.

Your ecu is fine as long as your boost stays regulated at 10psi.

You might need to add an adjustable boost controller to get that, but it's not hard.

Be careful with the universal cats - FD exhaust runs very very hot and can break down a universal in short order. Spend the extra bucks now for a Bonez and it should run well for a long time.

Bonez highflow cat . its the only one to go with.

I ended up just plunking down the 2k for the stock cat. My mechanic, Chris Greene, told me I could go with the high-flo, but it tends to run a bit dirtier. My car has been in his shop for a year now, and I just want to get it out asap...

Chris Greene is still in business? Where? My 20B sat in his shop for a year until I "stole" it back from him. It's taken another year and $30K to fix all the things he *ucked up on the car.

I thought he was closed down and no longer involved in the rotary community. And $2K for a stock cat? Dude, you should have gone with one of the many other options.

Yeah.... I see the stock stuff go for like 100 bucks used all the time.
