undertray/cooling question
 

Does the undertray on a stock car extend below the front-end? What about on an R model, does it go below the lip as well?

I have a C-West frontend with a FMIC and temps are movin on up with the ambient temps. FWIW, my radiator and A/C condensor are in the stock location. I have the undertray installed and noticed that you could basically draw a straight line from the bottom of the front-end to the bottom of the undertray, and there's maybe a 3 inch horizontal gap between the two. So my frontend is blocking most of the air that the undertray should be picking up. I'm considering trying to fab up a more efficient undertray for my setup.

To those interested in the value of the undertray (I've read all the old posts): if you've got the rad/condensor in the stock location, keep it. Even with my screwed up front-end aerodynamics I noticed a 2-3 degree celcius increase with it removed.

On my R1, the undertray comes right up under the R1 lip and meets it there. There is no gap where air could escape.

Yeah, the undertray and the lip share the same mounting bolts on all models.

I've got the 99 Spec lip on my 93 - it shares the majority of the mounting holes with a couple of fabricated/dremeled ones.....the undertray makes a big difference temp-wise.

which ones did you have to dremel. Was thinking about getting the 99 lip.

You've basically just got to line it up from the center and work your way out from there. It protudes very slightly into the front fender wells. I've gotten more comments on that front lip than before. It dramatically changes the look of the car from the front end - very exotic looking (in comparison to the 93 Touring lip I had on there before, shit, anything is exotic compared to that!) It definitely was worth the $160 vs the $$$$ R1 lip. It's proven pretty durable so far also with my lowered suspension. I've had it on for well over a year - very happy with it. Pretty simple install....

I got it from Slava way back before his store went down the sh*t hole....thank god I didn't ripped like sooooo many others!

I highly recommend it though, it really is a cheap, easy way to upgrade your 93-95 front end and is obviously much more durable than fiberglass.

I guess it's unclear to me how the undertray mates up to the lip since I've never seen it in person. Anyone have pics? I'm just trying to determine if my C-West front-end is making the undertray less efficient.

Ok, let me try to contribute a bit. The lip is sandwiched between the bottom edge of the front bumper and the front portion of the undertray. The same ~12 ten mm bolts hold both components up. they thread right up, although with the '99 lip there are 2 places where you have to drill into the lip. There is no gap between the underside front edge of the bumper and the undertray.

The undertray definitely helps keep temps down. I think you're on the right track in fabbing something to bridge that gap and ensure that all the air that enters through the front bumper openings goes into the engine bay/rad/ic.
