Uh, oh... exhaust leak

Ok, i got new turbos, BNRs. I put them on and guess what tons of exhaust smoke from turbo area.

I am pretty sure i did everthing right, new gaskets, new studs, torqued to spec, double checked vacuum lines.

I crawled under the car when running and do hear some light clicking/clanking from the area. is there anything you are supposed to do with the flapper? Besides leave it alone?

I rechecked most of the turbo mounting bolts and they were still torqued correctly. I doesn't look like it is leaking out of the downpipe gasket.

Anything i missed, some special trick to do?

I am so no wanting to pull all that #*&! stuff out again.

Hating.....

Ok, so no comments, tell me it is pretty straight forward no secret tricks.

Which i guess leaves me with, something may have gotten wedged in, screw/nut fell while putting the turbo and magically got caught on the edge of the gasket, et..

Or maybe the exhaust housing is wraped.

Anyone else ever have this problem? Or am i just damn lucky?

I hear your pain, I'm having the same freaking problem and I don't know what it is.

If they're brand new BNRs, the smoke is normal. He paints them to make them look pretty, so the paint has to burn off. I recommend giving it some time before you yank them off, see if the smoke goes away :)

i spoke w/ him and he said the same thing, but this was within 5 seconds of car running, not enough time for them to get hot i would think

turbos are spinning sooo fast they get hot pretty quick. I started my car and backed out of the garage and got under the car while it was running, believe me they are hot that fast. I have stock turbos though. I had an exhaust leak when i first got my dp put on, blew one corner off of the gasket, i could tell instantly it was a leak though because it was so loud, i put the stock gasket back on and tightened everything up correctly and i can still hear a light clicking but i think thats just because it is a thin pipe instead of the beefy pre-cat.

I agree with goodfellas, i had a painted turbo kit on my teg and it smoke like crazy and was driving me nutz for like 2 days. smell the smoke. dont kill urself tho, u will b able to tell if it exhaust or paint.
