Twins replacement question
 

Hey Guys,

Would really appreciate some solid info and opinions on this.

Here is the story - i imported a JDM spec FD3 a few years back but never had chance to complete the work on it.

So now im trying to salvage the job - i have completely rebuilt the Block and now im a little undecided as to what to do next.

The 'Rats Nest' looks in a terrible mess the hoses are soo old and brittle now i would never put them back in a car. And the twins appear to functional mechanically ok but prolly could use a good rebuild.

I would like to Go Single and eliminate this whole mess - the price of the low end kits aint an issue however the cost of additional injectors, ECU's etc following up with the never ended PITA that is tuning is kinda scaring me off.

So Simple question - Rebuild and replace hosing with upgraded stock.
Or
Is there a single option i can easily and cheaply live with as an alternative.

If you don't have emissions, you can do the "simplified sequential". Write up is linked in the FAQ thread.

If you got a small single turbo, you could run it with the stock fuel system but you would still need an intercooler and Power FC (with tuning).

go single. Period, end of story. look for a used 35r and some used fuel system components(pump.rail,injectors). Twins are nice for less lag, but at the same time a single making 400hp, Making less heat, and no rats nest is preffered in my honest opinion.

On a budget, I would suggest you buy a Mityvac and test all the solenoids, buy a set of silicone hose (good stuff, not just any old silicone hose), and put the rats nest back together. Follow the vacuum hose diagram that is linked here. Or if you want to be extra sure of good performance, replace the turbo control solenoids (2), charge relief, and charge control solenoids with new mazda parts. Use the mityvac to test the actuators for leaks and stuff and you're on your way. You might consider eliminating much of the emissions stuff in the rats nest to clean things up. While it seems like a complicated mess, now is a very easy time to take care of it. It's much worse when the engine is all put back together.

Re-use the turbos. Unless they were blowing a lot of oil into the intake, rebuilding them is much more touchy than just bolting them back on.

Make sure your FPD, fuel lines, injectors, and injector o-rings are in good shape. Do a leak test as soon as you get enough stuff put together in the engine bay to do it.

For a few hundred bucks, you'll be on the road and enjoying sequential twins. You can always go single later, but that's a few thousand dollars up in cost.
