twin turbos replacements?
Besides the 99-spec turbos are they any other replacements turbos ? I wish to maintain twin turbo response but with more power. i have heard good things about petit.
Any others? |

thanks but isn't there anything cheaper? for 2 grand i could you single with the mods that i already have. Couldn't i just buy a pair of garretts gt25 or something like that?
|
Not really. BNR's are your best option.
Going sigle is more expensive than 2k. For sure you'll need need the turbo, manifold, wastegate, down pipe, fittings, custom piping. That alone is > 2k. Im gonna assume you already have a stand alone ECU, twin power, clutch, MP, exhaust *but* you still have to make sure your IC is adequate, have adequate fuel (pump, larger injectors), wideband, and last but not least proper tuning. |
i already have the pump and the larger injectors are 500 dollars max incluiding rails. I think that the difference in price is not that significant. While with a single turbo setup i can get more hp than with rebuilding bnr turbos
|
you are probably underestimating the price of going single. Unless you're doing a lot of the work yourself- in which case pix of your garage please!
BNRs are your best option unless you want to pay megabucks for over night twin turbos from japan- or boldly go where no one has gone before and have a custom manifold made. |

Saying "I'll get more horsepower out of a single" is an incomplete statement. What is your horsepower goal? What are your supporting mods? It is quite possible one of your other mods will be the limiting factor, not the turbos. The BNRs can handle a lot of boost. The engine and peripherals don't care if you have a single or twins, all your motor knows is the volume and psi of the boost you are pushing into it. I'm not knocking single turbos, in fact I'm going to go single instead of BNRs. But my goal is only 375whp and BNRs could do that easily. If money was the only factor, I'd go BNRs. But I just want a project to do, I want to simplify the engine bay (less vacuum hoses), and I want better thermal management. And I have money to burn. If you really lay out the cost + labor of converting to single, you will surely see it is more expensive, and doesn't necessarily increase horsepower. Check out the video in this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/time-slips-dyno-121/video-bnr-stage-3-dynapack-results-509445/ He is pushing 430whp on BNR stage 3 and the limiting factor is INJECTORS, not the turbos. |
well thank god labor in my country is dirt cheap. i could get the twin to single conversion for about $500 bucks of labor. this incluedes tunnning!! so labor is not an issue with me.
my goal is about 375-400whp. apparently i could reach this with the bnr turbos. Right now i am planning on rebuilding my engine and getting it street port. i hope that with my mods and 14psi i could reach 330whp. (right now i am at 290whp). i will see how 330whp feels on the street and then i will consider the bnr or single setup. in case you haven't notice .........there is a recession going out there!!! so money is a bit tight. |
so what mods do you already have?
|
power fc, walbro 255,catback, downpipe, midpipe 2.5, amemiya filter, v-mount intercooler, greddy boost controller,
|
i can assume that bnr turbos are much better than the 99 spec turbos?

there's a plethora of information out there about BNRs, tons of info about BNRs vs stock vs 99spec.
99spec are effectively the same as stock. The changes made to 99spec turbos will yeild at most 10whp over stock twins, and even that is on a case by case basis. Non-sequential BNRs have made upwards of 430whp vs the 360ish that the stockers typically top out at. 99spec twins cost about the same ammount as BNR, but the BNRs are vastly superior. I've heard rumor that the BNRs are a bit slower to spool than the stock twins, but I imagine they still spool faster than a most singles. They say this is because the BNRs use the stock housings, which are restrictive, and the stock turbo mani which is also pretty restrictive. You can't max out the stock twins on stock ECU or stock injectors, so clearly you can't on the BNRs either. Some have installed BNRs on an otherwise stock car, kept the boost right at 10PSI and been fine, but I wouldn't trust it. Hope I covered everything... |

well like I said a turbo kit which includes, turbo manifold, DP, wastegate, fittings $2600. You still need fuel rails injectors $500 (according to you) Wideband $300 EGT $250 clutch $400 Twin power $450 Custom piping $who knows since you are in another country here it would be around $150 Block off plates $70 (i think) Tune $ who knows since you are in another country. In the states $200-$500. Yeah you better make sure that tuner KNOWS how to tune SINGLE TURBO FD'S. 3" midpipe. 2.5 aint cutting it. $150 and odds and ends that pop up $200. total (not including a tune, nor custom piping)= $4420 opposed to BNR's $2350. And this is the bare bones, I needed an engine harness ($750) |

i see that you have the bnr turbos installed. could you expand on that? how much power at they putting? boost? are they sequencial? did you have to modified parts or they fit like the stock turbos? injectors?
|
BNR's come with a ported wastegate too. I run BNR's on a stock ecu and stock injectors.. although they are cleaned and a new fpd and a rewired supra fuel pump. all other reliability mods. Santa's gonna bring me a pfc this christmas, maybe even a trip to the track!
|
i think the only other option beyond the BNR3's and the Spec 99's are the Knightsport Twins, but i may be wrong.
Eitherway, you probably COULD go single for less than the cost of BNR3's but i garuntee all the parts will be CRAP and overall they wont last near as long as the BNR3's will. |
The rx7 store has
60-1 garrett turbo with hks manifold for 1,025 tial 44mm wastegate 399 850cc injectors 298. (i would use 850cc side and 850cc stock top) i believe wouldn't requiere rails and are good for 380-400whp. i am looking at 1800 dollars with shipping and i am done. maybe 700 bucks for fittings, labor and tune. My tuner has a FC running 8.8 with methanol. so he knows his shit. so the bnr's i find that are a bit expensive for some rebuild turbos. |
plus a single turbo downpipe, and yes you do need new rails as the stock primaries need to be milled to accept 850cc injectors

Yes, they are GT28s, and the T60-1 won't make the same power as the BNRs.
|
nevermind
|
if i put the bnr and want 370-400whp i would still need injectors but what else?
|
I'm going to switch sides on this and say you should go single turbo with that power level in mind.
At 370 to 400whp, you need the same sort of mods regardless of turbo configuration. HKS Twin Power Upgraded Rails and Injectors FPR I may be forgetting something |
