Turning back the odometer
 

OK I have actually wanted to post about this for a long time but never did because I know there will be a few people giving me BS about it. I bought my car 4 years ago with 64k miles on it...it now has 76k. I really want to turn my odometer all the way back to zero miles. I don't want to do this to try to scam any body or anything like that. I simply want to look down and see nice low numbers. I never plan on selling the car anyway. I want to look down and see something like "4154" on the odo. I'm sure their are people out there that agree with me on this. It just hurts me to see the mileage getting higher and higher. I'm also not worried about conflicting mileage reports on carfaxes or anything like that. The car is so illegal anyway haha. Is there anyway to do this with the digital odometer? Who can do this? What about buying a Jspec odo? Thanks...and if you want to yell at me go right ahead.

My friends went to zero after he got a new dash (tach, speedo, oil, water etc etc)

all you have to do is drive the car another 924 k miles. The odometer should go back on its own. lol.

No one really wants this information to be public for several reasons. One, if it was easy then we would all be buying cars with extremely low milage becasue some unscrupulious shop wants to make money. Two, it wouldn't give a good representation of the condition or use of the car, ever. Three, its extremely illegal.

If you don't want to see your milage go up the you have two choices. Buy a car with extremely low original miles or don't drive your FD.

You have to buy a new speed meter (speedometer). It cost me $600 CDN but now I only have 15 000 km which is probably the lowest milage rx-7 out there. The original speedometer crapped out on me so I bought a new one.

There ARE ways to do this. I don't know how, but I am sure that if you inquired around in some of the seemier places of your town you could find some leads.

A friend of mine always leases Hondas and Acuras. He ALWAYS goes over the limit in mileage. However, the salesman he has dealt with for the last 10+ years knows a guy that can turn the mileage back. When my friend gets ready to trade cars, he goes to the dealership, the salesman makes a call and then my friend goes to a place, hands the guy a $100 bill, the guy takes the car into the garage and voila'! a few minutes later the car has about 10,000 less miles.

No bullshit. Makes you REALLY wonder about some of the 'low mileage' used cars at dealers.....
And now, since so many states are going to "paperless" titles, you can't even contact the original owner(s) to verify the miles! :mad:

Since I changed the speedo when I changed to a manual differential with my manual tranny swap, the milage reads a lot higher then it actually is. I thought it would be cool if I could zero it when I put my 20B in so it would read the miles on the engine rather then on the chassis. Either way, it probably isn't something that should be publisized on this forum, for the reasons listed above...

Put the car on jackstands, start it up, and shift to reverse.

It helps more if you have a glass walled garage placed on a steep decline and are possibly afflicted with random moments of anger and/or angst.

Fact: in many states, if your car is more than ten years old, the mileage is irrelevant... it no longer needs to be a part of bills of sale or titles or anything. This *might* mean that it's not too illegal... I really don't know.

My opinion: unless you are COMPLETELY rebuilding a car, leave it alone. It isn't "morally correct." I've done this before on 30+ year old cars that I've taken 100% apart and built back up 100% new, but that's just about it. Even at that, if I'd known the original mileage (I didn't... bills of sale said "it's beyond the mechanical limits" and the original odometer was gone), I'd have kept it.

Perhaps changing your negative view of "high mileage" may help.

High mileage but pristine presentation and attention to detail means two things: the person actually DRIVES the car AND the car is/was taken care of.

even easier way to see low miles..... change to trip odometer, hit reset, then bang you have your low miles without any other effort, sure if your battery dies you have to start over, but that's what you're doing anyway.

widebody, sorry to just point and laugh here, but this is a bit like asking "How do I hotwire 'my' FD and bypass the alarm on 'my' FD?"... even though we know you're telling the truth about your situation. Like FormerPorscheGuy said, no body's going to put this info on a public forum. You'd probably have better luck *personally* contacting a used parts dealer, or someone who's dealt with this before. You were right in expecting to take a lot of shit for this, though. ;)

Hmmm... maybe I'll change my mileage to "4219", which in Japanese is "shi ni i ku" meaning something like "go to hell". :)

Believe me, if you do a search, you will actually see threads like this. I know i saw one, where someone told this guy how to disable his stock alarm from outside. Which I think is really stupid to post on public forums.

I should ask the people who sold me my FD! My Odometer says 58,000 mi. But my engine isn't original and it's F'ed up as well!

DAMN IT....my car says 58,xxx miles on it!! I don't like looking at those numbers it makes me feel as if my car is old can someone help me fix this problem by rolling my miles back. Cmon, you've gotta be kidding me. If you really want low miles that bad buy a new speedo. There is no way that info will be posted here and stay up for long. I can't believe it lasted this long.

I like looking at the high miles. People check out my car and ask what yeat it is I tell them '93 with 85k miles. I love the shocked reaction I get when they hear that it isnt brand new!

Just take good care of the car and be proud of the miles you put on it.

you guys are a bunch of elitest flamers. If i knew how to roll the odo back, i would tell you in a PM, but i wouldnt get on your thread and flame you for asking a tech question. If people think that this info should be kept private (i agree) thats great but keep their rude comments to themselves.
