Turn Key but NOTHING! Just installed engine! All I hear is a *Click*

Battery won't keep a charge, my exhaust temp gauge runs up and then down, letting me know I have power, but the interior lights wont stay on or anything. I turn the key to try and start it, and all I hear is a click.... possibly the ABS.... any clue?!?

InsaneGideon 11-02-03 02:54 AM

You sure that isn't your starter solenoid clicking?

That'd be my first guess. In that case, you're battery may be toast. Tried charging it with an external charger? Electrolyte level OK (if applicable)?

dhahlen 11-02-03 02:58 AM

The battery is good, we pulled it from my friends truck, and it might be the starter clicking, it was some kind of relay..

I just plugged in a Power FC, the 4 pins the manual said to remove, I didn't remove.... reason being I was told they were some emission crap and really didn't need to be removed....

any other ideas?

InsaneGideon 11-02-03 03:15 AM

When you say the lights wont stay on, do you mean they don't come on at all, during, or after you turn the key to start?

LT1-7 11-02-03 06:19 AM

probably the connection to your battery. Had the same problem a few weeks ago. Tightened a nut and started right up

odditysmurf 11-02-03 07:24 AM

Sounds like a connection problem on the battery. check those leads make sure they are corrosion free and tight.

gurlyricer 11-02-03 12:11 PM

Well I am going to go pick up a new battery anyway, since my last one took a shit since I let it sit for 2 months, when I get the new battery connected, I'll fire it up and let you all know =)

(oops... g/f's login... it's dhahlen...lol)

BATMAN 11-02-03 12:33 PM

I had that problem and it turned out to be the terminal connetion.

I went to pick up 24k gold plated terminals for $6 at a local auto parts store and never had a single problme since.

no corrosion and on or around the terminals.

Mean Machine 11-02-03 01:51 PM

could have knocked a wire loose my starter was doing the same thing and i tried everything; new battery, i was looking at the starter and everything and almost ordered a new starter when a buddy came over to take a look and it turned out a ground wire on the starter was loose. Second thoughts/looks always help.
good luck though

dhahlen 11-02-03 02:57 PM

Might be the starter... I am going tro have a look at it right now.. i have a fully charged battery and i am seeing no change...

dhahlen 11-02-03 03:00 PM

Also...

Radio will not turn on.. A/C will not turn on... gauges get power, headlights, and windows work, but they are a bit weak....

Any other suggestions?

911GT2 11-02-03 03:26 PM

Could it be an alarm acting up cus you disconnected the battery?

dhahlen 11-02-03 03:29 PM

I do have a viper alarm system that will not allow the car to start or even crank if it's been jacked... no clue how to disable it though... any ideas? i dont even know where the alarm wires in....

dhahlen 11-02-03 03:30 PM

A/C turns on... not the radio... or dome lights...

so we have

no power to radio
no power to dome lights
no power to hazzard/turn signals

power to headlights
power to windows/sunroof
power to exhaust temp gauge

skunks 11-02-03 03:35 PM

check grounding

dhahlen 11-02-03 03:42 PM

check the grounding to what?

Under the starter there is a smaller cylinder shaped thing, my friend said it is the starter solenoid...? It had one little clip going to it... and the grounding to the wire that is running to the start is fine I believe, it is mounted on a block above the starter....

dhahlen 11-02-03 04:15 PM

Here's the Rundown

Alright heres the deal...

Tried with Stock ECu
Tried with Power FC

Headlights and Motors have Power
Windows Have Power
Sunroof has Power

Turn signals have NO power
Stereo has NO power

I hear a click when I turn the key...

Engine was just rebuilt and installed, grounding on the starter looks fine, don't have a multimeter to check the voltages....

Battery is connected and charged fully,

I DO have a connection coming off the bottom of the fuse box on the positive side of the power, I don' tknow where this goes, it's a small connection that is positively charged, no clue what to do with it....

ENGINE WONT CRANK =((((((((((((((

Help me out if ya can!
I appreciate it!

check ground from engine to chassie and chassie to battery

InsaneGideon 11-02-03 08:01 PM

Check your fuses!

If your terminals were dirty, your headlights would be dim.

The magnetic switch on the starter may be sticking. Turn and hold the key to start, have someone tap the starter (or maybe the lower part of the "block"). That may wake it up. You shouldn't have to tap it very hard.

dhahlen 11-03-03 11:52 AM

I replaced the terminals... solenoid on the starter may be bad... who knows... i'll try that tapping method, if that doesn't work... i'm going to probably have it towed to a shop.... argh...

stlFD 11-03-03 12:44 PM

check your fuses, especially your main one, before you buy anything. The same thing happened to me when I did the vacum hose job. I must have accidentally shorted something while working on the car and it popped the main fuse. The car wouldn't start when I was done, not sure if anything else worked either.

dhahlen 11-03-03 12:47 PM

I checked all the fuses in the fuse box under the hood, it all looked good... which is hte main fuse?

Tom93R1 11-03-03 02:24 PM

I didnt even think of the alarm when we were working on it. I would almost bet money on that being the problem. We need to figure out how to disable that.

Broken09 11-03-03 02:57 PM

Check egi fuse. Mine was doing something similar and the fuse looked ok till I pulled it out and shook it, filament was blown but not enough to appear to be bad. If not that also check the positive connections to the main fuse box. Mine was coming loose and in turn causing some problems as well.

Its a Viper alarm system, any clue how to disable the bitch? I am going to contact the previous owner, see if he has any clue on it... any ideas?
