Turbos, Shaft Play, Oil Leak & Rebuilding

My question is "when is a turbo worth rebuilding" ?

I see many adds in the used part section of the forum saying one of the following: little shaft play or little oil leak, very little smoke etc.

I have done a search on the above and have not come to a satisfactory conclusion.

I thank you in advance for your input

I'd look to rebuild if they begin to make weird noise, smoke constantly/leak bad or have excessive shaft play (lots of front back and side to side).

in and out play is not good.

Don't mean to steal the thread, but my question is :...Can the Turbo(s) (primary and/or secondary) be easily taken off the manifold/engine for the purpose of a rebuild, Or would it be easier to take the manifold off with the Turbos attached??

Check out http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-...adialAxialPlay for how much ahaft paly is acceptable.
For rebuilding, typically the turbo assembly is removed from the engine, (while in the car). You can then take things apart as much as you are comfortable with. See bottom of http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-...leshooting.htm and also http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-7/TurboRe-n-Re.htm for more details on rebuilding.
