Turbo Question

Do you have to remove the engine to take the turbo's off or can it be done with the engine in? Thanks

P'cola FD 09-26-02 08:31 PM

You don't have to remove the engine. Take off all the intake pipes, the y-pipe, the downpipe, and all related heatsheilds, and the turbos will come out. Not a big deal, but if you haven't done much mechanical work before, then you should do a lot of researching first. Or take it to a pro.

The only way to learn is to read up and take a stab at it. If anything messes up you can take it to a pro to fix. =)

RotorMotorRX7 09-28-02 01:48 AM

No you should be fine.. turbo is exhaust driven.. just make sure the car is off obviously. and cool :D

Thanks for the help :)

Doesn't the turbos have oil lines going to them?

Hyperite 09-29-02 02:28 PM

Yeah, there are oil and coolant lines going to the turbos, but truthfully, not much leaks out when you pull the turbos off. If it's about time, you might as well drain both before working on it anyway.

Other than that, it's not tough to get 'em off, but make sure you soak those bolts with wd-40 or other liquid wrenching stuff or you'll be doin a lot of cursing.

Wish someone would've told me that a few months ago ...

I think my neighbors are scared of me now.

how long of a process do you thing this will be?

P'cola FD 10-03-02 10:10 PM

The first time I pulled the turbos, it took around 8 hours to get them off. After doing it more times then I'd like, I can get them off in about 3-3.5 hours, and put them back on even quicker. Plan on it taking longer rather than shorter, so if anything comes up you won't be in any trouble.
