Trouble pulling engine
Hey I'm trying to pull my engine but it seems like the shaft from the transmission is still hanging on somehow. I've seen a couple of guys pull their engines without having to drop the transmission. I've disconnected the clutch cover and everything else. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Did you release the clip on the clutch?
|
Are you talking about the collar? I went ahead and unbolted the six cover plate bolts.

Make sure the wedge collar is flush with the pressure plate. insert a long thick flatblade screwdriver in between the wedge collar and the throwout bearing, and twist the screwdriver 90 degrees. the throwout bearing should disconnect from the wedge collar. Boom! done.

If you havent already, get an engine leveler. You will thank yourself in the long run!

Yeah everything is disconnected, it just seems like the engine needs to go forward a little and then up but the engine mounts don't allow it to go forward. Any other suggestions?

You have to remove the motor mounts if you are leaving the tranny in the car. ;)
Takes about 10 mins at most to remove them. Remove the 17mm headed bolts that go into the bottom of the block thru the oil pan. |
DJseven, I've pulled numerous motors with the tranny still in the car, with the motor mounts still on the motor.

Every engine we pull has the motor mounts on it and the trans stays in the car.
Just put a jack under the trans to support it. This should give you the height you need to clear the motor mount "pockets" in the subframe, then pull the motor forward. If you have it raised and supported already and it still will not come forward then it is hung up on the pilot bearing and it is just going to take a little force. |
Well I got it out. Thanks to everyone for your help.

I pulled the engine from my personal car this way and found it to be a bigger headache than removing the mounts. The mounts were broken so this could have had a role in it. Ill give it another shot here soon and see if the results change. |

What are people's recommendation for automatics? Leave the trans in or take out with engine. Any hints? I search but not much info on automatics.
