Tranny rebuild????

Would this be an easy or difficult task for someone who is mechanically inclined?

Thanks!

With a lift and a few special tools you can rent, really easy, without them - arrgghh. Make sure you brace the engine well so that it can't move. (as in drop!) A simple hanger made out of flat iron and hung off the firewall top "shelf" is sufficient instead of buying "special" Mazda braces.

Might as well do the clutch while you're at it.

The Mazda shop manual covers it .

I would bet you are looking at $2K for a shop to do it buy the time you throw in all the parts, seals and labor. I wonder how much a new one is...?

ive seen used ones go for 900. also a shop here in daytona will rebuild everything (they wont just do the 5th gear synchro) with a warranty for 900

Does the shop manual offer good instructions on this. I got the manual with the car but I have not gone through it completely yet.

Garfinkle has built tranneys for years ,he said you need the common tools , transmission snap ring tool ,a puller or two , a vice helps ,the manual has a section to guide you . it takes time but is doable .you can make any special tool you may need. all the people on this forum seem to know alot. The gar thinks if he can do it so can any one,
