tranny questions before reinstalation
 

ok here it goes, i have a 5 speed that i have never personally seen in operation, which has 93K on it, and by judging from the rest of the car has not been well taken care of.

i bought my project car with an engine fire..so the clutch line is melted (i have all the replacement parts etc) but before i put the tranny back in the car and do all the repairs i wanted to see whats going on w/ 4th gear.... i am able to shift into any gear with ease (keep in mind there is no pressure in the clutch) except 4th gear... every other gear engages smoothly but when i go for 4th it feels like im hitting a wall... it will engage if i force it but something seems wrong to me. does this sound like a problem that needs to be addressed before the tranny goes back in, or is this normal for a tranny that isnt spinning?

Sounds like something you should definitly address before you put it back in... you can probably take a look yourself, you should be able to see whats going on just by taking off the pan... make sure you get a replacement gasket tho.

so it should engage? damn... ok ive never messed with a transmission before (i just consider it a black box and try not to think about it)... from looking at the FSM there seems to be tons of stuff to it.

ok what would i be looking for that would be broken... i have no clue about trannies, but i wonder if i should attempt to tear it apart and rebuild it myself

Q:are there many factory tools needed, or can most stuff be done w/ a set of sockets??

Q: also, how expensive are the usual parts that need to be replaced? (and WHAT is usually replaced during a rebuild??)

Q: would i be better off sending it to a transmission shop for the rebuild? (not that i have an extra grand lying around anyway)

You can drop the pan with a socket set

no i mean as far as a rebuild what special tools would i need??

My mechanic made all the long puller legs to do a rebuild on these units . He found a rebuild set from American Driveline for $ 350 or so .The bearings not in the set he got from the dealer .That was all bearings rollers and syn rings, gaskets . The total cost for parts was $ 500 . It took a lot of time because he changed some of the clearances . The unit shifts really nice with a Cs short shifter and a modified Hurst T handle .Extacy 7 will atest to that as he has driven the car . You should be able to make any tools needed . FIRST put the clutch plate on the shaft and have a friend spin it as you shift the gears . See if it will do better ( go in to fourth ) with the shaft turning before you take it apart . Let us know .

ok ill be back home next weekend and will have some extra time to play with the tranny. ill give an update on what i discover. thanks for the tips duboisr :wink:

I was just talking about pulling off the pan and looking into the tranny while shifting the gear, you more than likely will be able to see whats causing the trouble, No transmission experience needed at all, just logical a-b thinking! If it turns out their is a problem i would have someone with experience do the work. Putting the transmission together without the $$$$$$ of tools could be a unforgiving job.

Pulling the pan is fine but you will see the lay shaft . the main shaft is above and you will not see the shifting parts to well . Maybe use a mirror and light . See if the 4th gear syn ring is sticking to the cone after you engage 4th and go back to another gear .

yes this is very true... it would be no problem to drop the pan...the tranny/motor will be out of the car this weekend hopefully... the only problem is if i notice that something is wrong its kind of a moot point cause i cant fix myself anyway (unless i REALLY was into it id just have shop do it), and in the case that i dont notice anything then i can conclude that something may or may not be broken... then what... put it back in and then its a coin toss.... i wonder if i can live without 4th engaging properly for awhile (hehe joking)

arrrrgggg, sorry im just frustrated.... every single piece of this car needs to be rebuilt!!!!!! complete interior, everything under the hood, now most likely the tranny, the gas tank is patched, and i bet if i took it in to the body shop with my luck the frame is bent. this car was supposed to be "in great shape besides the engine fire"

anyway, this weekend ill hopefully get to take a peek and ill report back with pictures hopefully... maybe ill even document the engine/tranny removal and do a "photo writeup" or something
