Okay it's time to put the engine and tranny back in the car, what fluid should I use and how much do I need?
Redline MTL
Castrol Syntec
Valvoline Synpower
Mobile 1
NEO
Regular 75W90 Dyno oil?

I recommend Redline. And I think you need 3 bottles of MTL (they're like $10 each).

Redline seems to be a favorive on this forum. I used Mobil1 because Redline isn't available locally anywhere and I didn't want to wait 5 days to get some sent to me.

Does the FD tranny supposed to use GL-4 or GL-5?
How do you like the Mobile 1?
I did the same thing, I was planning on putting it in today and Redline was not available so got the Mobile 1. I have not yet put it in though so could take it back.

I THINK it was like 3.9 quarts but I could be wrong! It should say in the service manual of you have one. I reccomend getting one if you don't have one. Either way, fill it up to the fill plug. 4 quarts should do you fine. The Mobil 1 has been great so far.

Is the tranny new or rebuilt? If so, you should break it in with normal gear oil and then switch to synthetic.

I've used Redline MTL, MT90, and Neo. Neo is superior to Redline in performance. Shifting in the cold is so much smoother and easier and when warmed up, it's like butter. It's actually the correct weight 75W90, unlike Redline MTL. Redline MT90 doesn't work well. Neo is expensive though @ $40/gallon, which is just enough to fill both the tranny and differential.

Very true. Synthetic oil will not allow proper break in.

It's not rebuilt.
Hell the Mobile1 was $48 for 5 quarts so the Neo isn't much more.

Prefer Neo over Redline.
Northeast with 4 seasons...only issue with Neo is that it takes a bit (unsignificant) longer to warm up on cold temps but smooth therefater..
removed the notchiness on mine with Redline..
used it both on the tranny and diff

I had an occasional 2nd gear grind, I switched to redline MTL and its been gone for about a year.

redline and Neo seem to be the favs on the forum. I may try neo sometime just to compare them.

I also had the 2nd gear grind. But Redline tranny fluid didnt help me get rid of it. Maybe it's the synchro?

REDLINE Light Weight Shockproof. That stuff is the best. It's way better than MTL es[espcially if you take the car to the track now and then. It cushions alot beter that NEO. I used both in my FD and the Shockproof was the best.

You can find it a www.myoilshop.com it's not a bad site if you don't have a local shop to buy REDLINE products.

Anyone use Royal Purple?

Well Neo was not local so I got REDLINE Light Weight Shockproof, thanx you all! I'll take the Mobile 1 back.

I changed my stock gear oil to Redline lightweight shockproof in late September. I barley noticed a difference and it only lasted for about 3 months. I'm about to change it again because it feels worse then when I got it.

So I'm guessing that Neo is a bad choice if I'm going to be doing any racing at all huh?? I would like to get some more opinions on it though. The price is not an issue as long as I'm getting a quality product that will help my save money in the long run by not having to rebuild my tranny soon than needed. Thanx everybody.

Tranny takes 2.6 qts
Diff takes 1.4 qts

Don't put MTL or MT90 in the diff -- use regular 75W90 for that. MT oils have friction modifiers (feels less slippery between your fingers) to help the synchros. MT90 is closer to the specs for the tranny, though some poeple have used MTL.

I have Redline 75W90 in my diff and Neo in the tranny. They seem to work fine. I used to have MT90 in the tranny and it was fine, too.

I have access to an Amsoil dealer's account so I went with Amsoil 75w90 in both the transmission and the differential. There weren't any problems before hand and there aren't any now. Can't say I've noticed any significant change in how the transmission shifts or feels, but then again, I did it for reliability's/longevity's sake and not to fix a problem. Good luck.

I've used Amsoil and Redline in a TII tranny, switched back to dino oil because of poor hot weather performance.

Both the synthetics worked better when cold as far as shifting is concerned. After they warmed up the dino oil worked better, synthetic was notchy.

I've never used anything but dino oil in FD trannies based on my TII experiece. You'll probably break a part before you wear out the trans. TIIs have a very similar trans and they last longer and have less power than a FD.

YMMV.
