Trading mercedes s500 for this rx7 need help identifying!!!!

hey guys so im going to be trading my mercedes s500 for a 93fd , im trying to distinguish it between a base or a r1 .. I havent seen it in person and am waiting for the guy to send em the vin... also wanted to see what total mods you guys can see....

its a93 with 80 k on it 9k on a rebuild... looks like a mid mount intercooler setup , coilovers , some sort of programer, and some other little stuff any insight would be much appreciated... the owner said its a r1 but theres no rear spoiler and also not sure if the seats are the cloth or suede looking.. and since i havent seen it in person i cant see if it has dual oil coolers... anyway let me know what you think as im valuing my mercedes at 17k and not sure if the rx is worth it... its also coming with carbon under skirts and rear valance and a extra set of xxrs and flush head lights... and forgot has a exedy satge 1 clutch

the rx

Its a base model judging by the seats.

Where in NJ are you?

BLUE TII 05-23-11 05:13 PM

Looks like it started as a base model as it has the base seats and a no name front shock tower bar instead of the R1 bar, a new front lip spoiler instead of the R1 lip spoiler as you said no R1 rear wing and cruise control.

trexm3 05-23-11 05:13 PM

southern nj yea im not sure if they were swapped out or not i guess the only definite thing i can count on is getting the vin tonight and checking with mazda ... do you think its a decent deal if not im looking at a r33 gtst and a ls swapped r32 too but hate the whole legal ness of them rather have a fd anyway ....

Supernaut 05-23-11 05:19 PM

Who did the rebuild?

YoshiFD3S 05-23-11 05:30 PM

Based on the suggested value of your Mercedes, I'd say it's definitely NOT a fair trade.

That FD is clean and low-mileage, sure, but I'd bet it wouldn't sell for a dime over $12,000, if that. There's nothing particularly WRONG with that FD, from what I can see in the pics...but it's certainly not worth your Mercedes' suggested value is what I'm saying.

You'd be better off selling your Mercedes for as much as you can get, and then you'd have the cash-in-hand to pick and choose the FD YOU want.

rx7rcer09 05-23-11 05:36 PM

from the pics it looks to be a 93 base model.

caredden 05-23-11 05:39 PM

Curious as to why this is a left-hand drive car running a speedometer with kilometers? I would confirm the mileage on the odometer. Also, first pics show aftermarket wheels, but the last pics show stock wheels (albeit black).

I agree with Yoshi, sell your S500 outright and use that cash to buy an FD that you want. There are plenty out there at a good price.

thanks for the heads up man if it was a r1 would it be worth it ? i know a guy who will give me 15k for my mercedes any day almost just havent found any clean fds around for 15.... you think i should post it in the classifieds here for a trade? it has over 15k of just upgraded option ( the merc that is)

rx7rcer09 05-23-11 05:42 PM

i would take the 15K for the Benz, if you truly have you mid set on an FD take the cash and wait for a clean FD to come on the forum. wile i regret overpaying for my FD pre-recession i dont regret having the car. there are plenty of great sub 15K t0 15K FD's that come on the market here. and while the R1-R2 are most sought after these tend to be the most beat/abused for this reason, you can find a clean one but i would look closely at your options.

moosejaw 05-23-11 05:54 PM

What year is that S500?
A 2005
Whats the mileage?
MBs lose a lot of their value.....
Ive had four in total, three of them AMGs.

Even thought they arent worth a lot. Id still say the S500 is worth more than the FD(even with those fake exhaust tips)

Ryan95 05-23-11 05:55 PM

You're getting screwed. That car is pretty suspect.
It's definitely a base model. The mods don't add much value. The entire cluster has been swapped. But most importantly, you have an owner already lying to you about what you're buying.
I don't know enough about your merc to price it, but I wouldn't pay a dime over $10k for that FD, and it probably wouldn't sell for more than $12k on this forum.

I also don't agree with the fact that R1/2s are much more desirable to anybody that isn't building a track car. I'd be willing to bet a white on red 94 PEP/Touring would get a helluva lot more money over an R2.

trexm3 05-23-11 06:14 PM

thanks for all the help guys i greatly appreciate it ... they current owner bought it and doesnt know too much about fds he was told it was a r1 but once i took a closer look i suspected base as you guys stated...

Force13B 05-23-11 06:19 PM

Looks like a microtech ecu and base model, with R1 lip.

Cgotto6 05-23-11 06:29 PM

The model of an FD has no major role in price. The price difference between autos and manuals is much larger. With that said, that car is very over priced. Not going to fetch more than 12k, and thats if its in perfect working order.

I would sell your car first then keep your eye out in the classified section of this forum. Plenty of deals for less money.

Also I would be wary about the stated mileage of this car as it has a JDM speedo/odometer. This means it has been switched, and the new cluster will display the mileage (km) of the car it came out of.

trexm3 05-23-11 06:36 PM

man thinks guys im deff glad i sought advice before i made the jump instead of after...

ill most likely put it up in the classfieds here see if i can find a nice straight trade... that way can skip on a extra buying step....

moosejaw 05-23-11 07:56 PM

One thing for for sure is that benz is going to be considerably more to maintain than a FD
If the airmatic fails on you are easily looking at $1500/corner

Mr rx-7 tt 05-23-11 08:05 PM

Many assumptions being made. Does the Benz have a clean title? How about the FD? Can the mileage be verified on both cars? Clean carfax on both? What does the interior of the Benz look like, any tears in the leather etc.?

trexm3 05-23-11 08:30 PM

hey guys so ran the vin it came back base model... also the benz is perfect clean title and all bought it from my buddys father who owned the dealership... it should be up in the classified section soon i posted it waiting for the mods to approve it i guess.. the merc however has upgrade active body control suspension if ya check the thread out i have alot of money invested in it ... its has 3 different ride heights and just re did the whole setup with custom built links and re did the software for the suspension..

thanks guys for all the help the fd also came up with a milage mark on it in 08 it said it was re titled and given a not actul milage brand not sure why but that kills the value... so im passing on the deal as it looks now ...

once again this forum has been a great help hopefully i can find a fd thats almost perfect ahahha

thats strange, in germany s500 are damn expensive. even the old ones. You can't get a 2005 model with less than 200 000km for less than 28k $ ...

i would also sell the mercedes separatly and wait for the right fd ... it took me nearly one year to find mine.

in the US Mercedes have some of the worst depreciation of luxury vehicles. Japanese makes do the best (Lexus, Acura, not so much Infiniti). BMW does better than Mercedes.

That's not an R1 lip, it's the 99 spec lip.

zeroG 05-24-11 10:52 AM

trexm3: is the car going to be your only car, daily driver? Or do you have another car for that?

SWAT81 05-24-11 06:42 PM

that is not a fair trade at all buddy, you should definitely bring it to the dealer or do a private sale to get cash in hand.

trexm3 05-24-11 06:56 PM

ya i wanna sell it private but everyone is broke right now lol.... but i also have a e46 m3 i could daily once i fix it.. its aa stage 2 a methanol injected and i blew out 2 the slugs...(at least i hope thats it)

he also is including auto shine carbon fiber side step skirts and craft square read diffuseres also carbon vented vis hood and non flip head lights that are getting painted currently ...

i tried posting the s500 up for trade in the fd fs section but it was moved to the other model section which does seem to get much traffic
