TPS Adjustment help - high idle problem(2k)/ hesitation/

Hey Fellas,

I finally got my car back from getting painted. I'm trying to replace my TPS since I've had this annoying 3k hesitation. I've done all the searches and have done all the suggested grounding etc etc and none has helped so far. My uncle ( who is a mechanic, not a rotary mechanic) suggested that I replace the TPS since he mentioned that there was a dead spot on the old TPS when he tested it.

I've also searched and read all the topics regarding TPS adjustments on:

http://www.fd3s.net/tps_adjustment.html
http://www.rx7.org/Robinette/tps_adj.htm
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/fixed-my-idle-problems-backfiring-bucking-more-170731/

Here's my problem:

No voltage reading when moving the TPS...

BUT, when the TPS is off the throttle body (not bolted on) and I manually rotate the spring loaded sensor (backside of the TPS), I get voltage readings. But the moment I mount it back on with the two allen bolts and try to adjust, nothing.... I'm just stumped:dunno:

On a side note for the high idle:

-I tried adjusting it to different postions and driving it but it would just idle too high. I also tried adjusting the air screw on the bottom of the throttle body but it would only lower it by a couple of hundred RPM's. If it's too closed then it would just die when I'm driving it.

- I've also adjusted the throttle cable and giving it a little more slack but to no avail - also only a couple of hundred RPM's

-I've also also played with the Throttle adjustment screw also to no avail.

My conclusion is that the TPS is out of whack which is causing my high idle and my CEL code 12 and 18.... but without the proper voltage reading I can't make a proper adjustment...

Any suggestions will help regarding not getting any voltage reading or the hight idle...

Thanks in advance!!!

One thought - the TPS is, IIRC, a rheostat. If it is being flexed too much when you tighten it down, the wiper may go out of contact, giving no voltage on test, and bad voltage readings to the ECU. Maybe the mounting surface is damaged or out of line with the throttle shaft, causing the wiper to lose contact.

Are you mounting it so that the metal tabs from the throttle body sit on the flat side (not the cupped side) of the plastic tabs on the TPS? If you are sitting it on the cupped side, there'd be no pre-tension (and thus no voltage reading) and the metal tabs on the TB would turn away from the TPS tabs with throttle so you'll still get no reading. Ask me how I know. . . .

Thanks Dave... I'll look into that one as well...

BTW do you still race Formula Continental... I tested one back in 04 and it was a blast!!! Now if I can only swing having a Formula C, my FD and shifterkarts:icon16: :icon16: :icon16:

Yes, I still race Formula Continental. I'm getting my car converted to the Zetec engine this winter. Plan to do most of the F2000 championship Series races next year. Sure is a blast to drive!

Thank you very much Prophet...

You hit it right!!!!

The tabs were not on the flatside... You've just cured every headache and problem (high idle) I had since I've gotten my car back.. Now I can enjoy it

Thank you sir :worship: :worship:

3K hesitation is caused by the computer when going from closed circuit feedback mixture mapping to fixed mapping, only a Power FC will truly cure it. We all have it. The TPS adjustment in the shop manual works well.

POTENTIOMETER or rheostat?

You are correct - I should have said potentiometer, but conceptually, they are very close in function. Thanks.
