Toyota Supra 7mgte Coils replace leading ???
 

So i had been having some problmes with my car leading coil on my car and after doing some test turns out that my leading coil had gone bad. :icon_tdow

So yesterday my buddy and I drove to a friends place to pick up a transmission for his supra. we where all talking about car problems and i had mentioned mine. sitting next to him was a set of Toyota Supra 7MGTE coils and i looked at the plug where the harness would go and it had the same plug as the FD coil.

Anyway he let me borrow it. Today i got a chance to mess with it. First thing i noticed it was much bigger than stock FD leading coil.

So i began to take off one of the coils and see if it would fit on the FD coil harness AND IT DID!!!!

Turned it over and we got a spark !!!

Has anyone ever mess around with this idea ???
Could the 7m coil be and alternate or cheap way to get some more spark out of our cars or am i wasting my time.

im not planing on running it on my car i just wanna know if it's worth checking it out

very interesting. a cheap alternative solution is the t2 leading coil. its dirt cheap and rarely do they ever go bad. only thing you have to do to get it to work is cut the connector off and connect 2 ring terminals. ive been using this with no problems!!!

that i know.im not planing to run these guys but it would nice alternative and it's plug and play no hassle !

Don't you have to relocate the coils because the T2 coil is way too big to fit in the stock spot? The 7mte coil looks like it would fit in the stock location.

I am also interested in what phrost said. I have a way of getting some of these from a friend.

I would take it for a logged drive around the block. See if it runs good and then see what it does. Your leading coil is already bad so why not? Just make sure it doesn't knock and see if it can handle the load.

If you alter your coil mounting bracket you can mount the TII coil in the stock leading coil location.

The 7M coil might have completely different dwell requirements. If you have a Power FC and Datalogit you could fiddle with the dwell settings. Keep messing with it and see if you get anywhere.

Well i put the shit wagon back together and forgot to bolt the UIM down so when i cranked it revved to 3k lol scared the shit out me haha. anyway got that in order.

Tried it out and i can't get my plug wires to stay in while it's at idle. and for the split second i managed to get the coils to stay in with out arking a lethal spark onto my fuel line:lol: I notice the idle was bit better but didn't get a chance to really tell because they kept falling out and the FD was still cold.

i also ran the car at idle for a few moments with no leading coil and obviously it ran like crap. but it was intersting to see denso used the same connection's with the FD i wish i knew more about the coils so i could give a better response to this but after searching Supraforums and google last night i didn't really find much.

If any else has some input on this that would be awesome.

it doesn't surprise me that they use the same connectors. the Japanese automakers mostly use the same suppliers.
