touring package

what does the 1994 rx-7 mazda touring package have that the standard package dosn't have?

Rhode_Dog 11-30-03 10:47 PM

umm i read that the sunroof was no longer made of glass but of metal, err, the door panels were no longer tan, but black. The overal changes for the 94 was a revamped dash, passanger airbag, and some other small tidbits.

Fumanchu 11-30-03 10:50 PM

The sunroof was glass in the '94's.

I'm posting on the end of this old message, b/c for some reason i can't post new threads.
I am a FC owner with a new FD 1993. (see sig) the vin # is JM1FD3317P0200002. After some research i notice that this is the 2nd car off the line in the USA. Does this make the car worth anything? The guy i bought it from, a guy in his 50s, said he worked for mazda in the 90s and was the VP of Marketing for the USA. He said the car is the 2nd one ever made, blah blah blah. But then he shows the car in a photo album of him and the car at the Detroit Auto Show and tells me about how Mazda owned it from 1993 to 1996 when he retired and bought it. Carfax and the Title both showed him buying in in December of 1996 with 206 miles on the car.

The car has signs of a show car. super clean inside and out, and almost looks new up under the car. my mechanic thinks that the guy is telling the truth. Then on top of it the guy that owned it says it was an R1 / Touring Mix. So i'm like umm hmm. Here's a List of what it has.

Metal Sunroof, bose system, rear wiper, fog lights, rear wiper, front spoiler, rear wing, leather seats, dual oil cooler, oem strut tower brace, and my mechanic says its got the r1 suspension upgrade. It's silver and red, just like the one in the early brochures in 93'. (he didnt say it was that car.)

The guy was japanesse and had a phat mazda gold ring, and he even showed me underneath his rolex had enscribed, "Xiu, Thanks for 10 Years with Mazda" But i dont trust anyone. But when i got the car in my possesion last week and looked at the vin, i was like dang, maybe this dude wasn't lying.

The car has like holes drilled in the doors that have rods that open the doors by themselves, like you'd have at a show, and scrapes underneathe, that you really only get loading and unloading off of a truck.

I stress the CARFAX was clean, the title checked out. Is this car LEGIT? should i keep it stock? is it worth anything more? It's not like i'm going to sell it, just wanting to know the truth, so i dont lie to people.

rynberg 05-28-05 01:22 AM

Probably legit...but I don't think it really makes it worth more than any other clean low mileage FD.

JConn2299 05-28-05 03:12 AM

If RX-7's ever become collectible it'll be worth something, but that's a big if.

Now, they may give you a primo spot at Sevenstock, or something like that. I'd certainly like to see the car.

And it sounds legit to me. Canadian and overseas models had a mix of features like yours. And there were special order U.S. cars, such as the R-2 model that had a sunroof. It appears in the RX-7 Performance Handbook.

What I'd be concerned about are the recalls and other '93 bugaboos. Have they been corrected? I would think the recalls have been done, but what about the other things? Does it have the 3,500 rpm hesitation, for instance?

I'd keep on good terms with the guy. He could be a wealth of information. Call him and tell him how much you like the car. Maybe ask him a question or two. Keep in touch with him.

89droptoprx7 05-28-05 08:55 AM

good idea. all the recalls are fixed and the 3,500rpm is fixed. Efini twins are getting installed right now. I just want to be truthful with folks when it comes to that stuff, there are so many stories going around now days. Here are some stock pics. Are the door sills aftermarket or OEM? I didnt know if that was like an option. And should it have splash guards or was that purely an option. I dont mine telling ya'll i payed 14.5k for it. Was this a good deal? That was the guys buy it now on eBay. (which is where liars live)

I think you have a beautiful car that's a one of a kind.
The price wasn't a steal but you get what you pay for.
It seems like you will appreciate this car, my question is will you honor and respect it?
By that I mean keeping it "pure"- factory twins, reliable upgrades...No: 20 inch chrome wheels, No giant wing, No neons, No vinyl graphics...etc.
Please bring this to Sevenstock and other shows, Great car!

oh and fix that driver's seat strap handle! :p

89droptoprx7 05-28-05 10:22 AM

yea i hooked the strap back up, that was the first thing i did. I didnt take the picture. Is efini products keeping it pure? I'm wanting to only put mazda, efini, and mazdaspeed products on it. I have modded my FC pretty good, so i'm trying to keep this car OEM. And yes i'm old enough to honor and respect it. Anytime you spend your hard earned cash you got to. Rx7 Performance and Rx7 World always does my upgrades, no do it yourself rigging for me. Any other advice? What would have been a good price? Would it be crazy to make it look like a Spirit R? like i said OEM. I put 18' bbs rgs on it. I'll link the look i'm going for, tell me if i'm out of line. Spirit R Wallpaper

aREX4X 05-28-05 10:38 AM

Dude that's a SWEET deal! The car looks like it's in mint shape, and silver with the red interior is not your average find.

X....

oneflytrini 05-28-05 11:23 AM

94's and 95's also had different dash defogger vents than the 93's...

JConn2299 05-28-05 12:16 PM

Splash guards were a dealer installed option, as were the silver sill protectors. The dealers had little after purchase brochures with a number of options that didn't come on the car from the factory (a sunroof deflector was another one). You could have the dealer install them or install them yourself. Some were put on years afterwards.

The one thing I do notice that is different is that your front air splitter is painted body color, not black. I'd be curious if it came from the factory that way or was that done after the car was built? That's one of the things I'd ask the previous owner. Manufacturers often make last minute changes right as production gets underway. So I'd be curious if they originally planned on a body colored front air dam.

But the car looks outstanding. If you're really thinking of making it collectible, then you shouldn't alter it too much. Or at least save all the pieces and make sure that it can be returned to its former state easily.

One last question. What's that silver electronic gizmo under the dash on the left hand side?

JConn2299 05-28-05 12:22 PM

One other thing. There's no Mazda badge on the front of the car. What happened to that, I wonder? Again, if you're interested in preserving the car to make it collectible, those are the little anal thing collectors care about.

89droptoprx7 05-28-05 12:22 PM

they guy had added an aftermarket 6disc changer, that was the first thing that i removed. He said they painted the front lip for the show. Because it always got scratched going on and off the truck from show to show. And yes i'm going to keep all the OEM parts and only use oem parts to mod it. Like efini emblems, efini twins, etc. Would the 99 spec nose and lip be ok? How about the taillights too? I took the emblems off to either get new ones or efini emblems. Hate that stupid flame emblem. But the front emblem was tarnished. so i'm replacing it. I'll know more about the car on saturday when i get it back from Rx7World on the new turbos.

Well, you may have two competing interests. Making your car the way you want it, or having a historical showcar that people would be interested to see. If you want a historical show car than you shouldn't change anything. Keep it exactly the way it appeared in carshows around the country.

But since RX-7's aren't collectible, and you have a number of changes in mind, then I'd say go ahead and make it your own. But there will be nothing for people to see if you tell them this is a super-early production showcar. It'll look like just any other modded FD.

If you were to change one or two minor things, keep the original pieces, and do it in such away that the car could be returned easily to its former state, then you could get away with that. But beyond a certain point, the car starts to lose its originality. But then a museum piece can't really be driven, and I don't think you want that. So go ahead and make the car the way you want it. You can always point to the VIN # as an interesting curiosity.

89droptoprx7 05-28-05 12:39 PM

i'm already built a place in my garage to hold all the parts i take off. I'm not and i repeat not going to molest the car. I might just change the emblems and thats it. but i do love that 99 spec nose on that spirit R. Just incase these do become collectables i'll have all the parts. :bigthumb: i'm not going to put any parts on the car that dont have a oem part #.

The dealer accessory brochure also had a 6 disc changer, but it only showed the changer itself which went under the rear hatch. I'm not certain what controller was used. It's another thing I'd ask the previous owner.

I always thought the discs were changed by the single disc cd player that went with the original radio / tape player. But maybe not. Maybe there was a separate controller like yours. If it was part of a dealer installed accessory, then I'd store it someplace and wouldn't throw it out. Lots of collectible cars exhibit accessories that weren't factory installed. Dealer installed accessories are considered OK if they're "period correct."

89droptoprx7 05-28-05 12:47 PM

no it was a pioneer fm/am POS one. aka trash. :bigthumb:

89droptoprx7 05-28-05 08:18 PM

The guy told me today, that the mazdausa president got the first one off the line. it was a red/red touring/r1 mix like this one.

JConn2299 05-29-05 12:14 AM

...and the last U.S. version off the assembly line was being sold by a guy who worked for Ford SVT back in the 90's.

89droptoprx7 05-29-05 11:51 AM

yes i dont think it makes the car more valuable, its just a story to tell. Maybe one day when there are less of them around. Is it true that there were only 53 PEGs made in 1993? Since this car is a crossbread between the two, does this make it a PEG or just a touring?

None in '93, just '94 and '95. '95 Popular Equipment package also had fog lights in addition to leather seating, metal sunroof and cargo hatch cover. There was no touring model in the U.S. in '95.

89droptoprx7 05-29-05 01:42 PM

i read in the FAQ under 3rd gens and it said there were 53 PEGs. so what gives?
