hey there... So today I was preparing to change my transmission oil on my FD... I jacked up the car, leveled it, and then went under to do the dirty work... The first thing I did was remove the Fill Plug. As soon as I removed the fill plug the oil started gushing out... Now from my understanding there shouldnt be any oil coming out of the fill hole right? Unless it is overfilled... but how the hell do you overfill the transmission??... Is there pressure inside of the transmission that was pushing the oil out or was the transmission really overfilled?... Last time I took my 7 to jiffy lube to get the tranny oil changed.... That was about a year ago and I remember the guy telling me that he put in the whole gallon of Neo oil that I gave him.... So im guessing they really overfilled it? Or does oil always gush out of the fill plug when it is removed first?...
I dont want to drain the whole transmission cuz i only bought 1 quart of oil. My tranny has been acting weird lately... grinding gears and not shifting in as smoothly.... I thought it was due to a low amount of gear oil in the tranny, since my transmission leaks oil... so i only bought 1 quart and dont have a car to go buy more oil now... haha So i was wondering.. should I just wait until the oil levels out and stops flowing out of the fill hole, plug it up again, and just drive it? Or should I do a complete transmission flush?

replace transmission fluid with a quality synthetic. Redline MT-90 is well regarded for Rx-7 transmissions. You did not drain the fluid according to the recommended procedure. Follow the workshop manual procedure for draining and filling:

Since you drained off the excess fluid by removing the fill plug, now you should have the right amount. Close it up and drive it.

hell no... no more jiffy lube.. haha and i did drain it the right way according to rob robinette.. haha But yeah i guess my main question would be "will i be okay if i opened up the Fill plug, waited for the excess oil to flow out, and then close it up. would i be okay to drive?" Thats basically what i did.. I opened the fill plug, drained it, until the oil was at the bottom of the drain plug port, closed it up, and now im driving around like that... So i should be okay right? I have the right amount in? There shouldnt have been any pressure from anything in the transmission that forced the fluid out causing me to have less fluid in my tranny but still flow out of the drain hole??

Yes. As long as the car was essentially level you should be OK. But I'd still change it out as soon as practical. You have no idea what crap Jiffy Lube put in there.

Does anyone know the socket size for that main drain plug, (A)??

Im doing it this weekend and i want to make sure i have the socket, it not ill have to go to autozone to get it.

I know mine broke loose easily and I didn't have to buy a 24mm socket. IIRC a 15/16" works too if you happen to already have one.

^ It is either 15/16" or 1" I dont remember what size I used but the standard wrench worked fine with no stripping of the plug. Most likely it was 15/16" even though the decimal is smaller than the conversion for 24mm

24 millimeters = 0.94488189 in
15 / 16" = 0.9375in
1"=1.0in.



I have found as the metric sizes get larger there is less of a need for the proper sized metric wrench to loosen the nut. Except for 17MM and 23MM.

Yeah a 15/16 would prob work but I don't have that either lol.

Plus 24mm would be a super snug fit. Standard sizes always have some play. I think we're (the united states) are the only dummies who don't follow the metric system lol

Yup 15/16 did work.

This stuff stinks like crazy!!!!!

After draining, my dumb ass put everything away, lowered the car etc. Only to find out I forgot you can't fill through the shifter.

Now I gotta jack the car again and fill it. Does anyone know the size for the fill plug?

Yes, square head and it's a pipe thread, so it should come off using a simple cresent wrench without too much trouble. Just don't go crazy tight when you put it back on. IIRC I used a little teflon tape on mine.

14mm for the fill plug and 12mm for the smaller drain plug. :icon_tup:

Most people use Neo 75w90HD, me included.

Not sure how they managed to overfill the tarns but we recently changed the trans fluid fluid for a customer and at least 1.5 quarts came out of the FILL plug hole. We replaced it with redline MT90, smoooooooth shifting afterward. If I remember correctly MT90 is a little rough when the weather gets colder.
