Too cheap to buy a fire extinguisher for your car?
Yikes.
A travesty..... let's all observe a moment of silence for that what used to be beautiful FD
That puts a bad image in my head about my silver FD. I feel really bad for him.
I used to have a full sized extinguisher that I confiscated from Wake Forest in my 7 lol. I wasn't messing around...
thats one hell of a backfire! no but seriously that sucks....what caused it?
Fuel mods had been suggested on the pistonheads forum.
Dayyyumn. :Single tear: :(
BTW, the owner said "it was a fuel leak on the swirl pot." |

The auto fire system did nothing to stop the fire, except cost me plenty to replace and refill after the accident. By the time the fire truck got there the flames were about the same size with me diving out the window. Looked hopeless as hell, the fuel system, the tires, the fiberglass body, all burned to the ground. In a heroic effort my crew and I fixed most of the damage overnight and won the race the next day. At the starting grid for the race the marshall said something like: "Gee, I know it is not legal to race without fenders but, if it's OK with the Tech people, it's OK with me." The tech people missed the accident and never registered the damage so, I got to race and win in an open wheeled car the next day. I hope the owner of this car had good insurance, at the least. that really really sucks :(:(:(
Oh man im sure that brings flashbacks for a few of us. Luckily I had a extinguisher in the car when mine broke out. No doubt saved my FD.
Thats Blitzy's car here in the UK its had £25k spent & 500hp went up in flames due to a fuel leak on the way to Rotorstock III, the extinguisher didnt do much good though :(
Good Lord. I just put one in my car for doing track stuff $45 is cheap insurance.
honest question, where can I pick up a fire extinguisher and where can I get it recharged?
I think I'm going to be sick!

Well that and Halon is simply a better fire suppressant overall (hence it's exclusive use in aircrafts). Pricey, but worth every dime.
The best for oil and gas fires is Halon 2402 which disperses as a liquid.
Second best is Halon 1301 which disperses as a gas. Dry Chem is worst for car fires but is cheapest and leaves a powder mess. Use to install Halon systems in computer rooms and large industry sites. They even have Halon systems that can put out explosions before they do any damage. |
I've got a fire extinguisher in my car, have had it for some time now. But realistically, a fuel fire gets out of hand REAL QUICK!
I've got an automatic HALON system in my boat, it kicks ass. Sadly though, HALON was decided to be one of those 'bad' gasses that was contributing to the Greenhouse Effect. So systems with HALON are hard to get now. |
thats such a heartbreak! i really dont know what i would do if my car ever burned up... i know its much worse than losing a girlfriend lol.
How much time does one really have to get out, open the hood, keep the hood propped up and open fire with and extinguisher? Where do you shoot? Is there a typical trouble spot?
Im assuming by the time you see flame out of the hood, it might be too late. What are the dangers? Can anything in the engine bay explode? or is the main risk a large amount of fuel being dispersed under the car quickly if something does burst/melt? I have a small extinguisher that the previous owner purchased. |
