Timing & some other stuff
Just blew my new motor. Can it be that my timing is too advanced? how do i check and how do i retard?
Also when is the anti-detonation device coming out.. or is it already out... where can i get it from.... whats the difference between this anti-detonation device and the J&S knock system?? Also please tell me how to run-in a new engine with old housings in good shape... Also I am getting the Rotary aviation master rebuild kit... Any reviews? Along with the bruce turrentine rebuild video.. I am a first time rebuilder any precautions... thanks |
Unless you have an aftermarket ECU, then it's extremely doubtful it was timing that caused your problem.

What mods do you have on the car and how many miles were on the motor? Also, if you blew an apex seal(s), your housings could be trashed. |

You can't do a mail order map for 14 psi....for one, your fuel injectors were probably being maxed out. If you want to run higher boost than 10-11 psi, you are going to have buy a wideband and the datalogit and learn to tune yourself (assuming that there are no PFC/RX-7 knowledgable tuners in your area, which is probably a pretty valid assumption!).
Tuning the fuel portion won't be that difficult, you'll just have to make sure the a/f curve is smooth and rich enough. As for timing, I wouldn't change anything from the default maps except for fixing the two negative split cells. You could also ask Jason at the rx7store for a safe map appropriate for your mods (I'm not sure if he charges anything, but he has a lot of good, safe maps). Unfortunately with this car, there aren't easy ways to big power, unless you count the Pettit ecu. That would probably be a good solution for you if it would work in your car. Also, if you want to run 14+ psi, you will need larger injectors and fuel pump. |
Actually, to be safe, I would reset the PFC to erase whatever maps has been put in there. Add 3% of fuel to the cells above 3k rpm and run with that until you get it tuned. Keep the car at 12 psi or less.

And that's exactly why you don't buy a programmable ECU unless you are going to have it tuned on the car.

If you are left to tuning it yourself, get over to the PowerFC part of the Rx7 forum and do alot of reading.
Many of us have purchased Datalogits and widebands and have had much sucess tuning our own cars. Good luck with the new motor, better check those turbos as your broken apex seals may have damaged the turbines. |
