? for those who use the pfs purple box
 

i've done some research on this unit and have decided that this is most likely the one i will purchase used due to price and support( PFS shop in my town). my question is: when the box is bought used does it need to be tuned for my car if all the maps are still at the stock settings? as far as i know, the stock settings are correct for all cars with basic bolt-ons, however i've seen some say that this unit must be tuned for the specific car. i'm looking for some clarification on this issue. any help from those with knowledge of the pfs pms would be appreciated.

bascially, every car is different. different brands of th same "part" will produce different things. with any of the aftermarket ECUs, you should really tune it with a wideband O2 sensor.

don't trust the settings currently in there as being able to work well for your car. It could be too rich, too lean, or just right. Until you use a wideband, you just don't know.

tuning with the pmc is not bad. do a search in the 3rd gen section and the ecu section. there aer several good posts about the pmc.

You can bring it to PFS and they can restore the original maps...tuning is really easy.

IF you are running 10psi (unless VERY heavily moded) - just set EVERYTHING to "0". EVERYTHING!

Wade is a good person to talk to also. Tuning for higher than 10psi...take it to a dyno and use a WB.

The PMC is tuned with rather large tolerances- it is not likely that you will run lean if that's what you are worrying about. There is plenty of room for more aggressive tuning. (This is assuming that you have the basic mods: downpipe,cat-back, intake and intercooler)

So to answer your question, it is certainly not neccessary to tune the pmc for your individual car, but additional tuning can be done with ease.
