Thinking of selling my FD for an FC convertible.. crazy?
 

Does this sound like a crazy idea?

I'm considering selling my FD and buying an FC convertible. I've always wanted a convertible, but can't afford both cars (well, lets just say I don't 'want' to afford both cars).

I have the money and skills to maintain the FD, but modding is too expensive for me at this point, and not to mention the added maintenance that goes along with modding. I love the car, but I think a convertible would be awesome, and I want to buy a house in the next year and the extra money would come in handy for a downpayment.

Am I crazy?

hey, sounds like you have it layed out well enough in your head. as long as youre happy, youre not crazy :) just keep the rotary in your veins.

Yes. Have you driven a convertible FC?

Nope... I'm sure they're slow as hell compared to an FD, but its still 160 hp in a 3000 lb car. Thats not too bad I guess. I was checking out another guy on this forum's convert. FC, where he had Peter Farrell drop in a 3-rotor. Now that would kick ass, but that would kill my budget ;)

I wouldn't necessarily trade it for a convertible FC, but do whatever you need to do to get into a house.

I'm in the process of building a house now (closing mid November, hopefully) and I can't wait. There are more things to life than just cars... ;)

I hear that. I think I could afford the house and the FD, but man, it would tight.

Well, depending on your time frame for getting into a house, you might be able to keep your FD.... or you might be able to sell it, get into a house, then buy another one (a blown one and make it a project car).

FC's even convertables don't look nearly as good.

no your not crazy. were were at sevenstock this weekend and there were 100's of fd there and they all are exactly the same, its a good looking car but it got boring. besides if you want a very and a rotary you dont have a lot of choice.

Well it can go hand in hand. You just need a bigger garage. I have both the convert. and a 3rd gen they are totally different cars. As far as rags go you won't find a better one!

Yes, but keep in mind that not everyone makes the same money.

If paw140's profile is correct, I know I couldn't have afforded to keep/maintain my FD, get a FC vert, and purchase a decent house all at the same time.

Something would have had to go... In hind site, I would be much better off now had I done the house thing instead of messing with sports during those years...

Yep, my profile is correct. I'm almost 24, going through grad school and getting my phd. I make enough to afford a decent house, and maybe a nice car too, but not an FD, FC vert, house with a large garage, etc.

I know I'd be better off in the long run getting rid of the FD, but thats a very hard thing to do ;)

Oops, I mean to add that I couldn't have done all that when I was the age he is now... ;)

I could have had a house and my sports cars, however I probably couldn't have furnished the house for 4 years. ;)

Yep, your money direction start changing when you get into houses. I'm used to apartment life.. something breaks, they take care of it... don't worry about yard work, etc...

It's going to be a change, but I'm looking forward to it.

I would just suggest that you think about what you want then see where your finances are... Once you do that, you can plan out what needs to happen to make the plan a reality. It might not involve getting rid of your FD.

Just don't cheat yourself. If you are going to get a house, get one that you like. Don't get one that you don't like just because it's a house that you can afford with your FD.

I would do it. In hindsight, I would have bought an FC and a beater rather than my FD. In the middle of my B.S. right now, everytime the car hiccups I get nervous and worry about what I'm going to do. when the car has to stay down for a little while, I have to catch rides eveywhere. As much as I LOVE my car, I would rather have played around with a TII, and been able to relax and focus more on my studies. In the end I don't own my FD....my FD owns me. :owned:

I do have a beater right now, a POS 1994 Chevy Beretta, which I hate. I think its less reliable than my FD. I have a motorcycle too... I have too many toys ;)

I agree for some people it can be like that. I've found myself in this position many times before.

I don't think you're crazy for considering a FC convertible, and I agree there are more important things than cars. I am a major gearhead, love modifing cars, talking about them, etc, but I look back on all the cool cars my dad has had in the past and it makes me see it's ok to get rid of a car you really love as long as it's for good reasons or to do something better for yourself. He lived after he got rid of some of his car(s) and went on to start new projects/buy new cars when he had the money. For instance he sold his '68 chevelle and a couple years later built a streetrod(where his real love is). Life does go on and can sometimes be better in the end if you do make a sacrifice or two.

I agree make the sacrifice to buy the house, sure you'll miss your car you'd be stupid to think you wouldn't but I am sure it will be possible for you to get another one in the future.

Or maybe you'll end up getting something else in the future? or maybe you'll end up waiting for the 4th gen 7? Who knows, but I've again realized that at some point or another there won't be any car I own(or should I say have owned) that I won't eventually get rid of. Meaning if I bought a FD today, eventually by the time I'm 90 y/o(I'm 23 now) I'll have gotten rid of it for some reason, and why not make it a good reason(like for buying a house). Lots of people say that they will own their car forever but I highly highly doubt that.

You can never have to many toys.I have 11 cars and just looked at another one today (a little b-day present) to round out the collection. I never want to hear I have to many toys. If you don't have one you need one.

What would be cool is if you got a FC vert and then restored it so it was mint. I rarely see a nice mint FC around, most are kind of beat up. Probably a combination of the fact they are older, more reliable, and so much fun to drive ;). Find yourself a mint '92, that would be sweet.

yah i know, but i just can't get excited about another fd, they all end up the same, thats the boring part

Personnaly I don't like verts because if you happen to flip one, the car will be riding you. Make sure to get a really good roll bar/cage.

Drive a FC 'vert, drive a Miata. Then make a decision. FC 'verts aren't really sports cars, Miatas are.

Both have benefits, consider maintence, ride, comfort, handling, gas mileage, etc. The FC is going to be more comfortable, quieter, slower, worse mileage and higher maintence. The Miata will be quick, cheap, loud, bumpy and handle awesome relatively.
