Thinking of importing an RX7 from Japan???
 

Hi Fellas,

I am considering importing an RX7 from Japan and could do with some advice!!

I am also a bit worried about it as I dont know much about the rotary engine ect...can peeps please give me some reassurance regarding reliability as most people I mention it to seem to tell me im mad, but surely if the car is as popular as it is this is over hyped???

Also, the year i am looking at is a 1994 R2. Can anyone give some specific info on this model?? I would appreciate it!!

Finally, I know that this is a two seater car and was wondering if the area/partition between the boot/trunk and the interior folds down. ie will I be able to get my golf clubs into the boot/trunk.

Any assistance here would be really appreciated!

Yes, you can fit you golf clubs in it if you fold down the divider, BUT it really isnt a great fit. They will extend all by the shifter. If you really need this car to carry golf clubs put them in your passanger seat ......I guess???

Please read the FAQ thread and use the search function. Importing questions would be better asked in the European sub-forum, as we don't do it in the US.

What would be the point of importing a car from Japan? "Cool factor"? since spending WAY more money on the same car is totally cool in my book.. oh and you get to drive from the other side.. WOOHOO!!!

just find a good rx7 close to you. use the money you saved to buy the reliability mods and put the rest in the bank... for when you need a rebuild. Do a TON of research. the FAQs are your best friend.

Thanks for the info lads...I forgot to say im Irish. We drive on the same side of the road as the Japanese do and RX7's are not all that common in Ireland and are way over priced.

I honestly have only looked into importing a vehicle to the US once... and it seemed to me it would be a nightmare with all the US regulations. I hope that you have much more user friendly laws in Ireland.

Yes, golf clubs fit, but the divider has to come out and you need to have a carry type bag that's narrow at the bottom. My Callaway Superlight 3.5 just squeezes in there.

I recently purchased a 2000 series 8 jap import in Australia. Cost about 12,000 pounds (28,000 aussie to be precise). Gorgeous car, but engine died 4 weeks after purchase. Sadly the premium I put into the car was only 95 octane and it should have been at least 98.. I did not think to ask the service station and assumed premium was all 98 octane... What an idiot i am ... Suffice to say the car is being rebuilt and I am still waiting 6 months down the track. its cost me a further 3000 pounds (8000 aussie) to rebuild and still it is not going... Kinda liken it to a bad dream, but such a gorgeous car. All I can say is be careful and one small mistake can have devastating consequences... Had a series 2 before this series 8 and it was so reliable. Probably consider a rx8 so as to avoid those expensive sequential turbos... Just my thoughts .... mind you I am still glad I have it... stunning vehicle :) GOOD LUCK
