things that have left you stranded

recently i was left stranded when a clutch hose went so i couldn't engage/disengage the clutch to drive it to the shop...

curious what problems you've had that have left you stranded and you had to tow it.

Montego 06-12-04 09:31 PM

engine seized, radiator leaking.

The only time I've been stranded by the car was at the track two weeks ago -- water pump gave out. Ended up renting a Uhaul with a car trailer to get it back up to the Bay Area, as it was significantly cheaper than a tow (from Buttonwillow).

A week after I bought my FD the turbos died, grinding noises and one hell of a smoke screen. That is the only thing to leave me stranded.

2nd turbo went out a couple weeks after i got it, but i was a couple miles from my house. i've also been stuck at the track, waiting for a tow truck from a broken axle and i recently shattered the diff casing. also got stranded on my way to the rx7 revo from an overheated diff

Blown Coolant Hoses, they were to old, and when I switched to the 16lb cap they couldnt handle it. Since then , replace and not a problem since.

oh yeah, i had a heater hose pop off once, but i was a mile from a gas station, so i got it back on and added some coolant

I got a hold of a g-tech and when I was testing 1/4 mile performance my coolant line under the air pump split open and dumped out my coolant..... car then got a ride on a buddies fladeck. After I got it repaired I then found out at the same time my tank split on my rad as well....all better now:D

Mahjik 06-13-04 09:32 AM

Wedge collar broke...

Lower coolant hose on the turbo.

master cylinder died... I was two blocks from my house, though.

edit: clutch master, not brake

SupraTT fuel pump died on me after only 700 miles. I was only a 1/4mi. walk from my house (would have been a 3 mile drive but I was able to cut through some people's back yards :) ) and I had 2 or 3 stock pumps in my garage. Took me only total of about 30 min to diagnose the problem, walk to house and back, and replace fuel pump.

Not too bad at all as far as a stranding goes.

Hose to the oil cooler blew off at 80 mph and 15 psi...

Edit: That's 15 psi of boost... not oil pressure. :)

silver93 06-13-04 11:19 AM

upper rad. hose blew.

bigmack000 06-13-04 11:27 AM

clutch blew up before, rad hose , and blowen motor because of a over heat. thats all

1) My negative terminal was freyed just enough to bleed off power and overwork my alternator.
Right outside campus, the bussiest intersection...and the alt. died. Called my Father down with the Durango and tow rope, and towed it 40 miles home. Didn't run again right again till I rebuilt the alt.

2) Lower radiator hose blew while idling for warm up..but still towed it to Mazda

coolant hose in back that goes from the housing up to the TB. And of course, the tear on the hose was down near the housing nipple.

c00lduke 06-13-04 12:08 PM

Clutch went bacd, tire popped, main fuse blew, slave cylinder failed, tire popped, tire popped again, ast failed, popped motor. Gotta love AAA

j9fd3s 06-13-04 12:36 PM

couple of bad starters (dont buy cheap rebuilds!), on the fb's, nothing on the fd's though

AgentSpeed 06-13-04 12:38 PM

My cherry popped on the dyno getting tuned about 2 hours away from my house. Thankfully Bryan at BNR towed it to his shop and is in the process of making her all better.

apexkw 06-13-04 12:47 PM

Pilot bearing imploded on me

Same exact thing happened to me. Fortunately the hose ruptured after I had already parked, idled the car for a few minutes, and shut it off..

Not the best way to start off a work day, seeing your car bleed coolant - but at least I wasn't late, and not stranded in a bad location.

Thanks AAA for the tow home later that night...

clutch release bearing (throw out bearing, whatever you wanna call it)

spoolin93r1 06-13-04 05:48 PM

oh yeah, i've also had a clutch fork break on me about 50 miles from my house. also had my main 120 amp fuse blow and shut the whole car down

well i had a really close call once that would of left me stranded on I-95 near baltimore a couple months ago. i go to an automotive school right off 95 and anyways i was leavin school one day and because of all the ricers that i go to school with i almost always end up with one or two of them on 95 and end up smokin em. Well the day that im talkin about some dude with this extremely riced out civic floors it by me, and i just couldnt say no to that. so i drop a gear and start rollin. maybe took a 1/4-1/2 mile before i rolled right on past him. at this time i think i was doin around 120. there wasnt too much traffic so i just kept on goin. then i saw one of those digital signs on 95 that gives you the traffic report and any delays comin up and it said that there was an accident comin up and sure enough i could see the traffic up ahead at a dead stop. so im in the far left lane and finally come to a stop and as soon as i was stopped smoke started pouring out from under my hood. i started yellin and cursing and pulled over to the side. before i shut my car off i glanced at the temp guage and it was normal, thank god right! i get out pop the hood and of course there is coolant all over everything and thats what was buring off causin all the smoke. after a couple minutes of lookin i find a very small "L" shaped coolant hose, right in the middle of the engine bay that had split and was gushing coolant. i had tools with me luckly and fixed it right there on the side of 95, just cut off the part that was cracked cause it was near the end of the hose and then pulled the "L" out of it and connected it back up. What is crazy about this was if it wasnt for the traffic comin to a complete stop i would of never new a thing until my temp guage said somethin. Cause when you goin over like 30mph if you car is smoking its gonna get sucked down right under the car and out the back and you wont know a thing. So luckly someone else got in an accident that day that kept my motor from blowing up
