Are these the "Wrong" apex seals

Hi.

Can anyone confirm whether these seals are the correct ones for a 3rd gen? I am concerned becacuse although my ones broke due to my own misjudgements, I have the same ones in another FD and would like to make absolutely sure that they are not a weak link in any way.

My previous apex seals were of the 2 piece kind, but I was supplied these from a supposed rotary expert. Are these not FC seals by any chance? I ask this because he gave me an FC gasket kit instead of the FD gasket kit I asked for.

Here are the apex seals....:

Thanks

Apex seals are apex seals - I think Mazda used the same ones, 86-95. Just double-checked - Mazdatrix does show the same part number for 2nd and 3rd gens.

Those are good ole stock 3 piece seals. At least they look like they were stock - good lord I've never seen apex seals that destroyed! Do you know if they're Hurley seals or some other aftermarket seal?

BTW, the apex seals don't come in the gasket kit.

Hi,

well the packet given to me was labelled genuine Mazda. Definitely not Hurley seals.

One thing I am not too clear about. What do we mean by 3 piece seals? Only the apex seal number 4 was originally in 3 pieces. The 3 above were the Rotechniks supplied ones, which were only in 1 piece. That is if we are not counting the springs etc.

Has anyone come across OE Mazda apex seals that are in 1 piece?

Thanks

Trev

PS. Yes I know only gaskets are supplied in a gasket set. When I bought the seals I bought the gaskets at the same time, and they messed up the gasket part of the order. That's why I was wondering if I got the wrong seals etc.

The last one is definately stock seals. Man what the hell happened to those 1st few seals!!?? I heard Mazda just recently switched from 3 to 2 piece. (2mm)

FC and FD seals are the same before the running change to 2 piece.

The 3mm seals only come in 2 piece from a 84-85' 13b.

The first 2 examples in the picture ARE 3-piece seals, but the third corner piece is missing. Compare those two to the bottom picture.

Apex seal #3 is missing the corner piece and a chunk off the long piece.

What in the world happened to that motor? :) I've never seen apex seals that trashed!

Hi dcfc,

Yes, the damage is pretty bad isn't it!

But, sorry for sounding a bit dense. ...

1, 2 and 3 are the same type of seal, all off the same rotor. I see what you mean, I forgot to scan the corner piece. The 3rd seal is from the car before the rebuild.

So are 1,2 and 3 classed as 2 piece seals? and 4 is classed as a 3 piece seal?

If you are saying 1,2 and 3 are 3 piece, does that mean 4 is a 4 piece??? (Probably not!)

But so far it seems like the 1,2 and 3 are Mazda's newer edition seal, 2mm 2 piece. Am I right guys?

Trev

BTW, the damage is due to 14psi boost, HKS FCD and stock ECU. Yes I know... stupid.. :D

1, 2, and 3 appear to be 2-piece seals. (Main piece and corner piece which wasn't photographed)

Given the way seal #3 is broken, I'd guess these were Hurley seals. The long piece likes to break that chunk off.

#4 is a standard Mazda 3-piece seal.

====================================

Does that mean Mazda AND Hurley make 2 Piece seals?

++ If they are Hurley seals, Rotechniks sold them to me in a Mazda bag.....

SORRY, just had a look, yes, Hurley's are 2 piece..

Mazda never made any 2 piece metal apex seals in 2mm thickness (pre Rx-8).
The 3mm metal seals are all 2 piece.
They do sell 1 piece carbon racing seals in 2mm and 3mm but they are non-turbo racing seals.

you can buy new 2mm 2pc seals that replace the mazda 3pc hte new 2 pc mazda seals will come in a distinct brown foam lined package each seal seperate with the mazda label on the package the seal will be snugly packed in this wrapper kind of a pitas to remove.if you have any other seal it wont be packaged in the above way.

AFAIK all "aftermarket" (non-Mazda) 2mm seals are 2-piece or 1-piece (I *think* Mazdatrix commissioned the 1-piece 2mm seals, not entirely sure and I can't find the info). Definitely though if it's 2mm 3-piece it came from Mazda.

fd3typer2 09-03-03 12:59 AM

Just to be clear, all the seals in the pic are 2mm

"Mazda never made any 2 piece metal apex seals in 2mm thickness (pre Rx-8)."

I am still not sure, 2mm, 2 piece seals..... OE Mazda part or not??

Rex, the seals I got were in a plastic bag, Mazda sticker/part number, and inside the bag, the seal was in a brown paper, a bit like greaseproof paper. No foam like you described. I'd like to know if I should be shaking my fist at Rotechniks yet!!

Mazda didn't make OE 2mm 2-piece seals... until a couple months ago or so.
