this is a compilation of pics from other forums i'm active on. i figured i'd put them up in case anyone wants to see them. i need an engine rebuild due to a blown coolant seal, and in the process i'm doing a number of other things to the car.

PLEASE do not post about the methods i'm using or what i've done to my car unless you are a certified uber-guru. i'm an amateur mechanic at best, and i'm doing all this with the few resources i have. i don't have an engine stand handy (both of the ones i could get are currently holding SR20's) so that's why the engine is on the floor of my garage. anyway, here's the pics:

batteries (Westco lists this battery on their site as 25 lbs, but shipping weight per UPS was 24 lbs, so it probably weighs 23. it wasn't heavy enough to trip my scale lol):

good work! I see one of the coolant seal culprits in the 6th picture...stock precat (not to mention entire exhaust). 86 that bitch ASAP. I didn't think I'd ever see a full stock exhaust come out of an FD again, haha!

You'll be pleased with the results of a new exhaust...in tone, flow, and added lightness ;)

if any of these pics are of help to anyone that is going to be pulling their engine, then i'm glad they've been of some use.

btw, a big thanks to Rotary Resurrection's website for the write-up on pulling the engine. i only needed it for a couple things, but it made a huge difference when i did use it.

usually it would be on stands, but i missed a couple bolts that had to come out pronto. plus i've used the jacks i have for a while and i'm pretty confident in them. but yeah, usually i practice a bit more safety.

it's a the JDM cat-less OEM downpipe :) that was the first thing i put on the car! i ported out the mouth a bit, but otherwise it's just good ol' cat-less OEM. i will be getting a new cat-back though. that stock muffler needs to go.

the real culprit was the previous owner :mad:

the last pic shows the size of the nut that's holding on the flywheel. it really is a 2-1/8" nut. and it really is on there really really well. well enough that my buddy and i stood on wrenches (one at the flywheel and one at the main pulley) and it held us both (we each weigh a buck fitty). so that option's out. i'll be getting an impact gun on it soon.

You need to do more than stand on the breaker bar to take off the flywheel nut. One time i broke two 3/4 inch to 1/2 inch adapters when I was jumping on a three foot breaker bar. It helps if you have a big air tank too with the impact gun.

You can put a 2' pipe on the end of a torque wrench you can get it off without the impact gun. You will need to bolt some angle iron onto the flywheel too to hold it from spinning. Looks like you made decent work of the removal either way, Good luck.

i'm not really looking forward to getting this nut loose :(

It's not that bad. Don't forget to leave the nut a few threads on until you get the flywheel loose (a big rubber mallet works great) If you don't leave that nut on there for safety then duck and cover!! :)

Nice work! No big deal about the engine on the floor. When you get a stand freed up, no problem picking up the motor.

my buddy has some air tools at his house, so we took the engine over there yesterday morning. the nut came off so easily that i started looking at buying some air tools myself as soon as i got it back home. here's a few more pics.

the flywheel is really heavy. i think i'm going to get an ACT Street Lite flywheel.

i was in my pajamas when i took the pics, i don't actually work on cars in flip flops :)

make sure you keep Rosco away from any coolant laying around. i hope getting things back together goes as smoothly as this.

i watch him like a hawk when he's in there with me, but i appreciate your concern. i'm a bit more worried about putting it together than taking it apart but i'm pretty confident it will go almost but not quite really smooth.

Looks good. Just a tip, get 2 peices of wood and sit them under the engine mounts so your motor isnt sitting on the oil pan. Cheap and easy. And yes, that flywheel nut is quiet annoying

right now it's sitting upside-down, so it's not on the oil pan. could that cause any problems?

You dog has the look of worry on his face lol as in "you are gonna be able toput it back together. right?"

he doesn't care either way, as long as he can get in it. i was in the driver's seat, pulling the center console, and he climbed over my lap and got in the passenger seat, then looked at me like "okay, let's go." he loves going for rides lol.

I hope when you took the motor to get the flywheel nut zapped off you also had you buddy take his impact gun to the 19mm main crank bolt......the flywheel nut is a piece of cake compared to the main crank bolt, seriously.

I've done some crazy things to get that bastard off of customer's motors, to include using a 3 foot long breaker bar with a 3/4 inch drive ratchet, and with a 500 rwhp mustang lowered down onto the motor to keep it from tilting......this was with an original-from-1993 motor, typically they zap off with the impact gun on 'high,' but in this case the gun wasn't cuttin' it.
