tachometer replacement?

I have a 93 touring and my tach is bouncing all over the place. I want to replace just the tach itself. my question is can I do that? just remove and replace the tach. If yes can I get newer model tachs to work with my 93 cluster? thanx

by the way I have read all about re-soldering the tach. I am just curious as to replacing the tach itself and not the whole cluster. I like my cluster. except for the tachometer. so if anyone has just swapped tachs please let me know it was done.

anyone?

KINETIK_FD3S Jan 7, 2005 06:52 AM

the cluster is just one unit.

AntiVenom7 Jan 7, 2005 07:58 AM

you could always stick and aftermarket tach in there if you don't mind cutting

put in a STACK display :)

Yes you can replace just the tach. You remove the whole cluster as a unit and there are three brass screws holding on the tach. The problem is finding someone willing to part with just a tach unit. You may want to try mazdarecycling.com. I beleive that is where we got the one I replaced in a 94 r2. I wasn't the one who ordered it however so I can't say for sure. I don't beleive Mazda will sell just the tach unit.

Yeah, most times you'd have to buy a whole instrument cluster used to get a tach, and you gotta hope the one you get isn't bad as well.

I'd seriously look into re-soldering the tach. It shouldn't be that difficult, and that fix will last for a VERY long time, if not forever.

I retract. It looks like there is a part number for just the tach though it's weird how they list it.

FD01-55-461 for normal suspension MT (base model/touring I'm assuming)
FD02-55-461 for all AT's
FD03-55-461 for Hard suspension MT (R1 models)

I think the difference will be that the base/touring models have cruise control with the cruise light being in the tach where as the R1 models do not have cruise and there fore have no accomodation for the light.

Now as to whether or not you can still get this part at mazda or whether it can be sold seperately is the question. If they do have it would you mind posting a price. I'd be curious as to what they want for it.

Greg

Actually I agree with Dale on trying to resolder it first. You've got nothing to lose and it might save you some money for a bit

Just checked the MazdaComp site. The tach (FD01-55-461) is listed for $482.70, but they show none in inventory.

Update:
The FD03-55-461 tach is listed at the same price, they show 1 in stock.

rx7joe Jan 7, 2005 09:37 AM

Holy crap that's a lot of money. I'm thinking you'll want to find one used.

thanx gentlemen. this is the type of stuff I wanted to know. I guess I will try and remove it and resolder the tach. if it works then problem solved if not then back to the drawing board. thanx to everyone that found part numbers and prices. the tach is stupid expensive, I was qouted by my Mazda stealership anywhere from $1300 to $2400 for a new cluster. I had no choice but to laugh at them with a stomach ache. anyway I will let everyone know what happens when I am done resoldering it. thanx again.

I have a write-up on how to re-solder the joint in your tach. Really straight forward and easy for most DIY's. If you'd like a copy PM me and be sure to inlcude your e-mail address. Its too large of a file to post; latest version is about 660K in PDF format.
