Tachometer

My tachometer is having an issue where it is stuck at 5k rpms while you drive around and only displays the correct reading after it goes to redline. I found guides on how to fix the tachometer online but no one seems to be having the same problem as me just wanted to make sure that if I go through the steps I found on another forum post it will fix the problem.

I’m not sure exactly what your symptoms are:

When does it first go to 5k? Does it return to zero when the car is turned off?

After you go to the redline, does it read correctly over the whole range or only 5k to 8k?

The residual magnetism in the air core motor causes it to rest at either the 5 o'clock or 11 o'clock position. 11 o’clock = 5k rpm. Normally when you shut the car down the tacho gets driven back to around 6 - 7 o'clock so when the power shuts off, it tries move to the closest position, 5 o’clock, but gets held up on the 0 rpm stop.

I'd troubleshoot by finding the guides that describe the 3 screws that transmit the 12V, G and the tach signal to the tacho PCB. Remove the cluster, install flying test leads (Make sure that the screws aren’t corroded. ) and reinstall. Check for a stable 12V supply. If you have a CRO check for the tach signal. If you don’t have a CRO you are flying blind. Get one for a few $s off eBay; just make sure it can handle at least 16V inputs.
