T2 Diff install problems HELP!!

I bought what is supposed to be a TII 87-88 diff from a forum member. From the pictures I have seen, it appeared to be the correct one...but yeah, you can't really see much from pictures.

Anyway, I had a local guy install it. He said everything went great and was a straight drop in, like it's suppose to be. I get the diff back and start to install it in my car. Then I start to slide the axles into the carrier. There is a ring that is preventing the driver's side axle from going in all the way, and on the passenger side, the splines don't go back far enough to seat the axle in all the way. That probably didn't make much sense, but I'll try to get pics later.

So regardless, I think I'm screwed. Does anyone have any idea what this diff could have come out of?

Here is how it looks from the driver's side.

Notice the washer piece. it is offset to the driver's side of the car. That is keeping the axle from fully seating.

Here is the passenger side.

It has two sets of splines. The axle is only splined for about 2 inches, so it won't seat all the way on this side either.

:( I'm pissed

Who did you get it from? Someone that powdercoats?

I hope you get this straightened out. If not I'm up for a road trip to meet the seller with you : )

I haven't heard anything back from the seller yet, but I just PMed him a couple hours ago. He has a good reputation so hopefully we can get things straightened out w/o a road trip. :)

Is there someone that powdercoats and rips people off, or were you just admiring the fresh paint job on my diff? The guy that swapped the carrier painted it for me, he is somewhat of a perfectionist. :)

Yes there is someone that powdercoats that has ripped some good members a new one.

That's awesome that your mechanic did that for you. I'm the same way, I want it perfect but I'm not a mechanic : )

Damn Ryan. Sorry to hear this.
I know your thread here is still pretty new, but do you think posting anything in the 2nd gen. section would be helpful in finding out what you DID buy?

I've been looking through FSMs and parts fiches all day and still have no clue what it is. I don't even think it's from a FC.

I got in contact with the seller and it sounds like he's going to work with me. Now I just have to worry about getting something else in there within the next week or so. After going through the hassle of removing it, installing a new carrier, blah blah blah, I really don't want to put my stocker back in.

If I am remembering correctly from an S5 Kaaz diff swap I did over a year ago, that is an S5 diff. I recall having to get another axle stub because the S5 axles have two different insertion lengths, while the Kaaz did not.

Sorry for your misfortune!

You are probably correct on this. After looking at the s5 parts fishe, I noticed that the s5 LSD axles, stubs or whatever they are on those are not symetrical.

Thanks for your help, even though it doesn't really get me anywhere. :D At least I know what I have now.

Big thanks to Kevin. I think most sellers would have told me to go kick rocks. :bigthumb:
