Suspension Woes

I need major help. While dropping my friend off at his house, i stopped at a stop sign about 50 feet from his house. When i came to a stop, there was a loud bang and vibration that came from the front of the vehicle. We thought it was a flat tire, but when we got to his house the whole front of my FD was sitting about a quarter of an inch off the ground. I have about 2 inches of wheel tuck on both sides of the front wheels. I cant drive it home because the tires are rubbing on the inside of the inner fenderwell. Now the car is stuck at my friends house and i am without tools or a flatbed What could have possibly happened? It's like i blew out both front shocks at exactly the same instant, but thats a stretch. WTF? please help.

WOW! That's a bad one. I can't imagine what did that? I can see one side of the suspension breaking and going down, but both sides?! Could the front subframe have snapped in half?
(As unlikely as that sounds.)
Has the car ever been in an accident which weakened something?

Sorry I can't offer more help. Obviously, you're going to have to get under the front end to see the problem.
Please let us know when you find out what went wrong.

JCONN,

the car has never been in an accident. I am going to crawl under the car and check it out today. If anyone else has any other suggestions as to what it could be, please let me know. Whatever the problem is, i'm going to have to fix it myself . This really bites.

It really does sound like your shocks mighta gone...was the noise that your car made something like an explosion (as opposed to something breaking and falling)? If so, i'd be it's your shocks. Which side of the car did it come from?

Jack that **** up and see what's up is all I can really offer up. Once you've got it on jackstands you can probably get under there and see what went kablooey.

Has to be something with the frame or the springs, because springs hold up the car and shocks dampen the effect of an uneven road unless they are high pressure filled shocks.
