Sudden loss of power, Extremely loud exhaust
While driving home from work tonight, merging onto the highway, the car suddenly lost power and became extremely loud. Was around 6k RPM and pretty close to full throttle, having a little fun with the on ramp that I'm now regretting.
Off throttle sounds perfectly normal. Any amount of gas sounds like a tractor and accelerates about as quickly and stalls with clutch in. Fearing the worse (blown motor) but wanted to see if there's anything else I should check this weekend as it is 1am here and I cant do any troubleshooting tonight. |

He means the actual vacuum line going from intake manifold to map sensor. they like to pop off from boost.

Agreed on the map sensor vacuum line. Have you looked things over in the light?

Yep, start with the easy stuff. If nothing is panning out, you may want to post a video of starting the car, idling, and revving so we can hear it.
Compression check is a good next step, you can easily do this with a parts store tester and that will tell you if the engine is good or not. If it is good, keep troubleshooting, if not, make plans for the engine. Dale |

After being sent off out of country for a bit I finally had time to get a video.
It's not looking good. Any help is apprciated. |

Whip the plugs out and do a chuff test. Are you a member of the UK FD Facebook group? There are a few guys doing mobile compression tests if you post up on there.

If it got stupid loud and would no longer build boost that could have been an exhaust gasket between the turbos and manifold blowing out. I’ve been there for sure but only while tracking it hard. Would be unusual for a street car to do that. Also possibly the turbo actuator on the manifold fell off or failed leaving the flapper open on the secondary turbos. Would cause more exhaust noise and slow response. Would still eventually build boost though. As as others have mentioned do the basic compression test to rule out broken seals first. |
Hard to tell in the 1st vid if there's an exhaust leak but that's a lot of smoke and it's idling high.
In the second vid an exhaust leak sound is a possibility and possibly it's the lower intake manifold gasket which would also raise the idle. When the turbo manifold gasket goes enough to affect boost it's a major exhaust leak sound even at idle. |
Do a compression test before anything else. If the motor is good, go from there.
