subaru wrx intercooler on fd?
Has anyone ever seen and considered installing the intercooler from the new Subaru WRX'S? They are quite large conpared to the stock FD IC and made of all metal. If I'm not mistaken. the Subaru's boost up 17 psi? Wonder what the pressure is on the WRX ic and if it would be a good swap??

The main question is why?
There are so many IC kits for the FD already that it doesn't really make any sense... Unless you just want a project to see if you can "make it happen". |
my friend has a wrx intercooler that he might be willing to sell. I thought about using it but being a mediocre mechanic at best, I didnt want to try something no one else has tried before. I assume youd have to get custom piping made? Im not even sure if it would fit in the stock position.

the stock wrx intercooler is kinda small, bigger than the stock fd one tho. I actually have the turboxs hyperflow intercooler thats made to replace the stock top mount on the wrx. Im gonna put it in my 93 fd in a couple of weeks. looks like its gonna fit alright but i will post pictures when its in.

Sounds like a PITA. The inlet and outlet would be on the vertical axis(or horizontal if you choose). Custom pluming would probably restrict flow a bunch too. It would have to sit real low so to clear the hood. It would work but doesn't seem worth it.
|
Yea, they run 17psi but its still less volume than what most people are running when they upgrade a RX7's IC.
psi isnt everything, its how much air your flowing at that psi that matters STEPHEN |
Don't put a lowly Scuby part on our FD. Get a GReddy V-spec FMIC from Rx7 Store. Won't find better prices anywhere

As far as why?? Well the it would be the same reason others do their own mods, COST. $1500 FOR AN INTERCOOLER IS NOT EXACTLY CHEAP. I'm sure someone could go to a salvage yard and pick up the WRX IC for a lot less. |
A lowly Subaru WRX? Gimme a break...
A Subie with the right mods will hand an FD it's ass....although slightly limited in the upper HP range, and hard pressed to hit 10's...let's see an FD compete against one in the weather. |
everyone says, oh the seven weighs less, it will tear u a new ass hole in the twisties, the poopercharged mustang cobra will bust u a new one in the straights when it runs into you, the subie with kick your ass in the weather. while all these can be true, they have no backup to any statements simply because they are not the current situation at the time. we're on the internet! who would race in the crappy weather anyway?

The stock RX7 intercooler is a piece of junk to me. But replacing it with the WRX intercooler is not even worth the trouble. It could even make things worse if not done properly. Buy a used IC kit and you'll be happy.

The stock subie units typically don't flow all that great, from what I learned when I was in the Subie crowd. As far as weather is conserned, a car that can pull <6 second 0-60 in dirt is a real statement about it's real world capacity. Racing in a bit of rain is not that much of a stretch, I know I have trouble launching 10/10th in a bit of water, thats not a problem with the subie

Dude..I've ran prettty hard in the POURING rain...
While others are just barely managine a solid 50mph in a steady downpour, I'm cruising along, hitting puddles with not even the slightest bit of worry at 80mph. |
Dude....relax. No one's saying that the "beauty of AWD" can't stand up to inclement weather.
Please tell me wtf that has to do with putting a suby intercooler on an FD? damn ppl are touchy. I agree with Elmo....it'd be a waste of time....save your money for an i/c that was designed for the rx7. |
Nah..not touchy. Don't read it the wrong way.
And I never said anything about the idea. I think it's gay. Go get an RX-7 IC. The Subie IC sucks. |
Tell that to the people using the Isuzu the Porsche 944 intercoolers..the question has merit.
|
Maybe I should rethink my position on this...my response was rather hasty.
I have no factual data on which intercooler is more efficient and flows better. I do know that the WRX IC is definetly quite a bit larger than the SMIC on the FD. Just for discussion sake, when I get home today, I'll take pictures of the intercooler on my WRX and find the flow numbers for it... Actually, this DEFINETLY might be a good idea, if it works. Why? Because there are TONS of Subarus that have switched to a FMIC, and have their IC's up for sale for a cheap price. My bad on my earlier testiness... |

I already have.
