Stripped Screws On Solenoid Rack Figures...
Any good way to get stripped screws out? It figures that I'd strip my screws even though i was leaning over the screwdriver and everything but whatever. After doing my spark plugs, radiator, and starting the vacuum hose job I can see why people don't think twice to sell their 7.

Vise-Grips can help -- grab the screw head from the side, lock the Grips, and turn.

same thing happened to me... I used an impact driver, and it worked beautifully. If you can't afford one, then try vise grips which may or may not work.

if none of the above work, just run a drill bit through the center of them. That will usually just bust them apart.

Those screws get brittle from the engine heat over time. It really wouldn't matter how much force you had on them, most of the time the head of the screw is just too worn out and basically falls apart as you try to remove it. I had my rack laying on the floor outside of the car and the screws still stripped trying to remove them. ;) As Max mentioned, vise-grips will be your best bet. However, at this point, you may as well just unbolt it from the engine block. Replace the screws with allen or hex bolts (I used allen head bolts). |
Thanks for the suggestions. However in order to removed the entire rack from the engine block don't you have to unplug the fuel lines and what not? Read it somewhere maybe I'll just do that since it should be easier to get the stripped bolts out that way instead of sitting on the fender and leaning over heh. I just got frustrated last night after I stripped the screws since I like everyone else has had to deal with to many of those. Ususally I've just drilled them out but I wanted an easier way. :)

Thanks Mahjik for the clarification. Think I'll do that tonight after work then hit up some hardware shop for new screws. Maybe some titanium ones that can't strip haha. That would be nice if they made shit like that available. Ah well *faints at the sight of all the vacuum lines*.

what about Sears, for a stripped screw remover, I can't remember exactly what they are called. anyone know what I am talking about, Bob Villa and shit.

The problem is, you really don't have that much room for those tools while the rack is in the car. |

yea then you can remove one vacuum line at a time and replace it so not to switch them around or cut them the wrong length...
