Strange Brakes

I have been looking at pictures of other FDs and I noticed that the front brakes on my car are different. They are not the squared of ones that you normally see but have what looks like cooling fins. I'll post pics tomorrow but can anyone tell me why they're different without pictures?

felix_is_alive 02-19-07 08:42 AM

hhhmmm....need pics to see what youre talking about , you shure this wasn`t modded at sometime ?

BobfisH 02-19-07 09:18 AM

I think FC brakes had fins didnt they?

They are also pretty much the same size i believe (couple of mm out)

maybe the owner had a spare set of FC brakes around when his FD ones went duff?

Specter328 02-19-07 10:21 AM

I was thinking they looked like FC brakes like you said, here are the pictures:

oh yeah, thats definitly fc brakes..

Specter328 02-19-07 10:39 AM

Just my luck, how do they differ from FD front brakes? i.e. Braking power, pad size, anything else you can think of.

Mechanic 02-19-07 10:46 AM

i've no clue as of the difference, all i know is the fd caliper looks nicer, i heard everything is very similar, but i am no expert, i dont have a fd to compare. lol I only say they are similar because most fc guys bitch at noobies because they said they want fd brakes on a fc -=) lol i mean.. uhh i dont know who would ask such a silly question...

by the way if you dont mind, can you take the wheel off and take a picture of the setup and the way it is bolted up? -=P hehehhe I just want to see how much work would it be to modify fd big brake kit to work with a fc.

Specter328 02-19-07 10:56 AM

Sure, if it warms up this afternoon I'll see if i can, I just want to know if I'm lacking breaking power, I know alot of braking has to do with the tires but I want to know if this robbing my braking power?

Those are FC brakes as mentioned, I'm pretty sure they're specifically TII brakes. I doubt you're losing much (if any) in the braking department.

If you're interested in switching to the proper brakes, send me a PM. I'll have these beauties available soon :)

You might feel different pedal pressure or different brake bias. So be sure that if you change them you make sure the rear brakes are also FD brakes.

Since the T2 brakes are smaller, they could heat soak quicker on the track. But for normal driving, or even aggressive driving on the street, it's not likely you'll see any difference before/after the switch.

I just took some more pictures with the wheels off, it looks like they bolted right up and I still have FD OE rotors at 11.5 inches. I also took some pictures of the rear brakes to make sure they're the right ones.

sooo... if i had the money and nothing better to do with it... i can run the fd calipers on my fc!!! -=X hahah, well first i have to get my car back on the road...

hey I am surprised that the difference is so minimal. IIRC the fc rotors are a bit smaller than the fd, I read in many fc threads that they are virtually identical performance wise caliper. but look wise... big difference here. I have yet to be able to confirm this. I've been reading a few threads, they all seem to leave the topic and let the thread die once they get to "they are the same caliper but different look"

I thought FC rotors were smaller also but the calipers fit the FD rotors.

I don't think they are specific to the TII.

My bone stock 91 vert had these brakes.

I've got two sets of stock front FD calipers for sale. One set is painted black with polished mazda lettering, from a 93. and the others are completely stock from a low mileage 95... lemme know if you want a set.

i know when you buy the rebuild kits for FD brakes you can just use the FC 4 piston rebuild kit for a noticable difference in price.. pistons and such are the same

Specter328 04-06-07 12:45 PM

Since I have FC Front Brakes what pads do I use? Are they same as the FD pads?

rynberg 04-06-07 01:10 PM

The TII and sport models used the same size brake pads front and rear as the FD.

Thanks
