strange and bizarre criket sound

I'm now the pround owner of a 93 r1 and my brother has a 93 touring model. it's pretty cool pulling up to places with semi matching cars. what isn't cool is the fact that I have a sceaming criket sound from my engine! it does it when I first start up when the motor is cold and then of course when i'm out driving around. i think it's the alternator, but it might also be that the belts are too tight. does anyone have any ideas. i wish i could throw a sound bite of it. it's hard to look cool driveing down the road when a sound like a screaming hampster is coming from your car. thanks.

criket sound and one more thing

what is a good exhaust? can I just buy a muffler and have a local shop make me a 3" cat-back without my fd makeing a wet-fart getting blown into a coffee can that hondas are known for? my brother has a racing beat single tip and it sounds nice and is pretty quite, i'd liek something similar. thanks for the input.

yup check your belts. tight? haven't heard that one... maybe loose, or you got coolant on it, or worn/old belts.

thats my guess

The sound is probably your belts slipping. You could try just tightening the one that's slipping, but since the car is new to you I would get new belts and have someone experienced install them. I think I've also heard that it's good to use light sandpaper on the pulleys since the squealing polishes them down.

Just get a RB Single or Dual tip muffler, it's worth every penny. You could have a shop make it, but there is no guarantee it will sound/look/fit the way you want. Leave the stock cat in there. If you don't have a downpipe, I'd plan for one of those - again get a name-brand bolt-in.

You can get nice cat-backs VERY reasonably. The HKS Hiper is a fantastic unit, and you can get it around $300. Used cat-backs pop up frequently - there's no sense getting a generic muffler shop exhaust, leave that to the Honda guys.

My guess is there is probably a bad bearing in the alt. That tends to make a cricket sound. If your belts are all tight and its still making the noise, you can take a pry-bar and put it up to your ear, and stick the other end on various things while the motor is running. You can usually pinpoint the origin of the noise this way.

As far as the exaust, I think Dale hit it on the nose. I have he HKS hiper and got it for under $300 brand new. It really is a great unit for the price.

cool. thanks for the tips. I think it's my power stearing pump. 124000 miles i think it needs to be replaced. I thought it was the alt at first but then I remember what happens when the pwr stearing pump goes. I've got to take it to get all the fluids drained and flushed and re-filed. and see what they say. thanks for the input on the exaust, i possitively don't want a honda muffler. I still have my tsudo muffler from my civic (tryin to sell the civic), and i had to get a stock type muffler put back on due to the fact that after i drove down to san antonio to see my girlfriend and drove back the next day my ears bled! no shit. so no more of that. i'll try to get a racing beat and get the rest done by a local shop, they do great work. anybody know where i can get a good deal on a power stearing pump?

If you want to buy a used one try the classifieds. If it were me i would drain the fluid and put some lucas power stearing additive with some fresh fluid and see if the noise goes away first.
