stonger hatch lifts?
 

I have a mazdaspeed wing on my car and the hatch wont stay up without help, does anyone know of any stonger lifts to keep it up?

Yeah, I've asked around and people say that I just screwed.

maybe you can find some lifts off of another car with a hatchback that is heavier?

it might be possible that yours are getting old...mine can barely lift my hatch and i have the R1 wing. So maby if you got new stock ones it might help.

I believe that there were 3 different sets of stock hatch lifts. One was for the base with no wiper or spoiler. The other is for the R1/touring to hold up the spoiler. Then I think there is one for the touring with add-on spoiler so it can hold up the spoiler and wiper motor...

I've also heard that the R1 lifts are stronger than the Base ones. I guess because of the addition of the rear wing on the R1 model..... not positive on that, but definately something to check into.

Also very dependant on the weather. On a hot day, my hatch will pop open on its own as soon as I hit the hatch release. On a cold day, it takes much more effort to lift up the hatch.

-8BFA-62-620 (R-1 - Touring ? )
-8BF9-62-620 (Base ? )

And I think I've got the wrong ones on mine....... :(

Autozone carries them for about $33 each with a lifetime warranty.

i agree with the age thing more than anything else

they are a mini air shock and wear out

my old 1979 porsche turbo back lid would actually suck the hatch down if you opened to quickly as it was so worn at 200,000kms

Just that if you're as picky as I am, those won't allow the plasic covers to go back on lower attachments.

I looked on mazdasurplus and it was not clear what might be a heavy duty lift, then I looked at the mazda part number list off this CD of the parts manual I got. Looks like there are two models, but it is not clear which is the heavy duty for use with the wing on the hatch. The CD refers to a model for the hard suspension and one for the normal suspension. I am guessing the hard suspension might be the more powerful gas strut, but the parts list is not clear. Can anybody confirm?

That would correspond to previous post of "A" being R1 touring, "9" being base model,
but is the assumption right that the lift struts are stiffer for the r1?

Maybe you can get the 99 hatch lifts. I know the 99 wing weighs a hell of a lot more than the 93 and should do the job nicely. I guess your best bet would be to talk to one of the guys on the forum in japan.

Disconnect them and THEN try lifting the hatch.

I have a ghetto stick to hold it up, so at least would not have to hold the hatch up.

I think that the Mazda lifts are expensive. The aftermarket ones are crap. If you don't want to buy new lifts, there is a NICE ghetto mod that works well:

Go to your local hardware store and buy a 10" piece of 3 sided channel aluminum. Get the 1/2" wide (outside measurement) size.

Just slide it over the exposed piston when you open the hatch. It will work great. When you want to close the hatch, simply remove it, and slide it under the edge of your carpet.

Just got dealer quote for new struts
$145 each, but you get a pair for $290.

Yeah they have them available here for the 99pec rear spoiler, so no problem I would think to hold up any of the Mazdaspeed spoilers. The ones for the spoiler are actually cheaper then the ones for NO spoiler "werid"

You paid or got a quote quite a bit tooo high... Around $50 too high for the set.

I got replacements from AutoZone, the $33 a piece special. Aside from my order being cancelled twice for no apparent reason, and it taking about 4 months to get them, I'm satisfied.

So, L&R are not interchangeable? How does the left differ from the right?

:confused: Yeah, they're the same. At least the replacements were.

If you have a rear wiper, the wiring MAY run thru the passenger side strut, so it could be different.

I don't have a rear wiper, so I can't check.

Additional piece of trivia; the Mazda parts man said that the fourth character in the part number refers to a manufacturer, not an application. So part numbers with another character in the forth place could conceivably be for either application.
Any master parts application list for us cheapies looking for parted out parts for less than the cost of a new car?

I suspect that the only difference in the struts is if it has the wiring for the rear wiper. I would bet that there is no difference in strength.
