stock Vin Red 93 R1 with 17k miles, deal?

Found a dealer in NJ asking $21,000 for the car and includes a 6-mo 7,500 mile warranty. Good deal? Should I go for it?

c00lduke 03-22-04 09:06 AM

is it a base, touring, R1, what does it have?

pugg57 03-22-04 09:06 AM

mileage and condition would be good things to include here... but my guess and instinct here, unless it is in absouletely immaculate condition with everything having been replaced that could rott or break and it has about 5k miles on it, its not worth the money. you can get much better deals than that. a warranty on an FD unless they will replace the engine when it breaks is a joke and 6 months? its not worth it.

neit_jnf 03-22-04 09:08 AM

it is a stock Vin Red 93 R1 package with 17k original miles

I've seen $15k-$20k deals but they're higher mileage and modified.

I'm looking for a stock R1 and don't plan to modify except for reliability mods

Sgtblue 03-22-04 09:34 AM

21K is, IMO too much. Do carfax, look the car over REAL good. Get the history on the car and talk to the previous owner(s) for care/repair records etc. Vacuum hose replacement? 5th gear synchro problems? Rear suspension bushings? Anything leaking? If it's really pristine stock, no problems and those miles....I'm not sure....but 21k sounds high.
If this is YOUR car...maybe 19k with a better warranty?

pugg57 03-22-04 09:50 AM

19k sounds good to me.

dgeesaman 03-22-04 09:54 AM

I think it depends how you're going to drive it. If you want to clean it up, not drive it too much, and enjoy the original 1993 stock R1 as your own personal collectible, then I think it may be what you want. That's kind of the way I like my RX-7. Take a look at it - if it's in truly pristine condition, I would pay 20k for that kind of car.

However, if you're going to daily drive it I say find another with a little more mileage for a lot less. The interior will peel, the engine will need water and vacuum hoses, the suspension bushings will die, the tranny will probably need a little work, etc. An extra 5 grand for the car w/ 17k will only put off these problems a little longer.

PVerdieck 03-22-04 10:13 AM

Some people here are on crack. Getting an FD with less that 20K miles for that price is a steal from an originality/collectible standpoint.

However, for that same money you could get one with more mileage, that already has 10K worth of mods that give you better reliability and performance.

If you can stay away from the performance mod bug then you will be fine with that car. It won't squeek or rattle, and downpipe/radiator/ast/boost gauge/water gauge should run about 1000 dollars. You probably want to slap a profec B on it, because you might also do intake and cat back. The only problem is that you will spend lots of this time on this forum, and then start to think about replacing the IC. At that point you should also get a Power FC. Now you are approaching 5K in mods. That is the point where you should have gotten a different FD.

adam c 03-22-04 01:58 PM

That is not an unreasonable price for a pristine car, with that mileage.

:werd: In the event that I hadn't purchased the FD I have now, I would look seriously into this deal if it was in my area.

matty 03-22-04 02:28 PM

thats a good price. i would pay it.

Not to pee in your cornflakes, but CARFAX is 100% worthless.

Case and point: I just recently sold my girlfriends car. Carfax came up clean as a whistle.

Her car had been in 2 major accidents (totally just over 20k each) and been stolen one time. The only thing the carfax caught was that the car had 2 owners - her parents, then her.

IMHO, pretty worthless. Dont rely on carfax at all.

Have it checked out by a mechanic - have him look for tell tale signs of accidents/damage like missing VIN stickers on the body panels (usually means the panels were replaced), varyations in the paint.

Lastly, I am in this guys boat about keeping it stock as possible. I have a DP, AST, R1 front lip/spoiler, and 2 gauges. I have done some other random mods like the Disney fan mod, but nothing performance wise (as I just sold my pettit intake). 21k is a lot of money to spend on a car that will only depreciate in value. 17-19 seems to be fair market value.

lastly, if you do get it, make sure the warranty covers engine loss. if it does, do your damndest to blow up that engine before the warranty expires. Since it will go anyway, you may as well get a new one and start fresh while its FREE!

Just my .02

Steve

I hate cornflakes, never touch em. About CARFAX, that's interesting...and even a better reason to contact the previous owner(s) if he can. A car with only 17k shouldn't have changed hands too many times and he can get a 1st hand history, and a feeling on how well the car was taken care of. Any dealer worth his "cornflakes" should be able to provide at least the most recent owner info.

mecman 03-22-04 04:48 PM

I think it is worth it. I paid $16K for a 93 touring with 59K on it.

mazdaspeed00 03-22-04 04:49 PM

that is about the range i would pay for a low milagage fd. just make sure its in good running condition.

LAracer 03-22-04 05:43 PM

Data point: I paid $22k for a VR R1 with 20k miles less than two years ago. It was in excellent condition and had aftermarket wheels, the PFS intercooler/intake setup, and a catback. It also came with the oem stuff.

To those that think that $21k for 17k miles is not a good deal, find me a similar car for less!

neit_jnf: don't forget to get the car checked out properly before you buy it. Don't asume that low miles = no problems. Use the information on this and other sites as a guide, but take it to a rorary shop if there's one close by. If it checks out, buy it!

KD Rotary, just across the PA border in Nazareth is one of the most long-standing and trusted shops around...

Many others, search in the Regional NE forum and you'll find a lot more.

matty 03-23-04 08:16 AM

i paid 21k for my 1994 pep FD four yrs ago. It had 15k miles and was in pristine condition in and out. This was thru a dealer with only a 30 day warranty. I think i stole the car!

nice car - the rear carpeting looks a bit torn up but other than that, looks clean.

if it doesnt have a price, does that mean its free? If its free its a good deal, if its more than 14k, its too much.

I think if you buy a car from a place like that you are going to get sodomized.

neit_jnf 03-24-04 12:57 AM

I'm going to try and have the dealer accept $18~$19k, lets see if they do it

roadsterdoc 03-24-04 01:19 PM

Jump on it. It's a good deal and worth every cent. I bought a 94 FD with 20k miles on it in December. I paid more than your dealer's asking price and I'm completely satisfied. You can't find many low mileage FDs around.
