Stock Radiator strength
 

How tight can you go on the stock outlets? If I remember correctly? You can crack the outlets? Last October I changed all my coolant hoses. I had coolant leakage from both radiator outlets. I discovered, the clamps I used were just turning and not putting enough pressure on the hoses. I thought they would be better than the stock clamps. So, I purchased a higher quality clamps and all was well. Today, the weather change (it's still winter here) and went for a short 20 minute drive...could'nt resist. I noticed 2 or 3 drops of coolant. They were located just under the outlets, but could not find more coolant around any outlets using my fingers. It can be difficult because the air moves the drops away from the problem sometimes. I inspected the outlets in October and they looked fine..but under pressure?? I have planned to purchase a aftermarket radiator, so I don't have to worry about ....How tight the clamps can go. Just wondering how many of you have cracked the outlets by over tightning the clamps?

My car has 36,000 miles. Appreciate any comments.

i believe many clamp manufacturers have maximum torque ratings for their clamps. i personally have never had a problems cracking a radiator outlet on my stock one or aftermarket (fluidyne). if you upgrade to an all aluminum radiator there's practically no way you'll crack the outlet since it is made of decently thick aluminum at those points. much more robust than the stock plastic endtanks/outlets that are made of plastics.

did you replace the coolant hoses with OEM parts? it seems that everything would fit perfectly with those.

I just asked mine how strong it was and it wouldn't say anything back. I think it's mad at me for leaving it out of the cold for a bigger stronger one.

OK anyways, my reply is kinda as silly as your question. It's pretty arbitrary how much you tighten a clamp and how strong the plastic is. Yes, you can crack it, it's rigid plastic and it heats up and cools down a lot, making it get more brittle with age. I doubt, however, that yours which sounds relatively young, could be cracked with reasonable tightening from a screwdriver (don't go break out the sockets). But then again, "reasonable" is a relative word and means something different to everyone.

Yes they are OEM hoses. I promised my wife I wouldn't purchase anymore parts for a while. That's why I was wondering if anyone has had cracking problems from over tightening. Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it!

Oliver! I'm glad that you thought I was funny and not an asshole ... some people read me as an asshole. Anyways, I think my radiator is mad because I dumped it for a fat radiator ... I guess the same way girls get ... if I'd ever actually dump a chick for a fat one. :D
