Stock Pre-cat
 

guys... don't flame me for this stupid question. I searched but I couldn't find the proper response amongst all the other threads. I know I will never EVER need my stock pre-cat again, but I usually like keeping all the stuff that I remove from my car, and keep it handy, or to give along with the car in case I sell it. Thing is, I can't seem to find the stupid thing anymore.

Anyhow, I know I will pass emissions without it, but in the even that I do need my stock pre-cat back, where can I get it and for how much? Does Malloy sell it?

Your best bet would be to buy a used one. I'm sure they are $$$ new.

Buy a used one if you're that obsessed about it, a new one will cost over $1000! :eek:

Yeah, I guess I will never really need it anyways... but it just pisses me off that I can't find the darn thing anymore.

Just a thought, how many of you out there actually still HAVE their stock dowpipes/precat sitting somewhere in your garage? if not, how did you get rid of it? threw it away? sold it?

Since most replace there's with a DP, you can find them used:

For example: Me.

I just bought a DP for my car. Previous owner paid that $1500 or so for a new stock Pre-Cat before I got my car! (Doh!) He didn't like the shift in power when he used a DP.

Once I get a stock Main-Cat, I'll be putting my DP on and I could sell you my lower mileage stock Pre-Cat...PM me :)

I also have a stock precat that I'm willing to give away. Ten bucks for my trouble plus shipping and it's yours. Changed to downpipe at 43K miles. My brother was supposed to take it and some other scrap metal to the foundry for some cash, but forgot to.

If your emissions test only measures what comes out the tailpipe, you should be OK if you still have just the stock main cat, as long as it still works and your engine is well warmed up before the test.

If the testing program also checks for evidence of "emissions tampering", the inspector may notice that the factory precat was replaced with a straight pipe, and order you to restore it to original condition.

I took the precat off because it was getting coked up from all the oil that the leaky secondary turbo shaft seal was passing. It got worse over time and held a lot of heat that warmed the cabin. I had to turn on the AC to cool the cabin each time I got back in the car after a short stop -- fresh outside air wasn't cold enough.

Has anyone ever tried to use carb cleaner or some other solvent to clean out the carbon, etc., in a used precat?

thanks for the responses all... so I guess most of you don't have your stock pre-cat anywhere's in your possession then? except a couple of you. (Larz, I pm-ed you :) )

Yeah, I figured I would pass emissions, but maybe not a visual. Do any of you know or have a list of what states require "visual" testing? I know Cali doesn't, since I have read that most of you have passed emissions with flying colors there, with a downpipe. It would just be nice to know this so I know what states I should NOT be moving to :)

I don't have a list, but ypu should know that some states will do a visual inspection only if the vehicle fails the tailpipe test. I kept my precat just in case.
