stock FC coils or MSD HVC-2 coils

Anybody upgrade from a FC leading coil to a MSD HVC-2 coil and notice an improvement?

I'm wondering if I should do this because I want to improve my ignition system to get the most out of it, currently I have 1 Jacobs FC1000 amp for the leading FC coil (FC coil replaced the FD coil).

I know the Jacobs FC3000 or Jacobs Pro Street digital amps are the best, and 2 of them with two MSD HVC-2 coils would be the best setup, but that's a bunch of money, the amps are $286 and $292 and the coils are $134 each on summit.

Maybe I should just get another FC1000 ($145) so I have one for each coil, and then either get another used FC coil (would 2 FC coils be better than the one?), that would be a much cheaper setup that should make a good improvement, or get two MSD HVC-2 coils. I run a lot of boost so I'm sure the ignition system upgrades will help.

Let me know if anyone has any experience with these and your thoughts/suggestions. Thanks!

bump. I want to order some parts tonight so they ship tomorrow from summit, I'm thinking about getting another FC1000 and the 2 MSD HVC-2 coils, guess now I got to check on which spark plug wires to get for those coils.

let me see if i got this right... you wanna run 2 fc leading coils in replacement of the 2 leading 2 trailing coils in order to have an all amped system?

why not just add a hks twin fire system

You got it all wrong and I don't know why you got so confused.

I'm wondering if my car will see an improvement if I get a msd coil to replace the FC leading coil. And if I will see a bigger improvement if I get another amp and the two msd coils for the leading plugs, one amp and msd coil for each leading plug, (leaving everything stock for the trailing plugs). I've read a lot and understood that the jacobs amps and msd coils will work better than the twin power, and not worried about the trailing.

So I decided to get another Jacobs FC1000 and 2 of the Jacobs C-4 coils (1 amp and coil for each leading spark plug) since they appear to be real good aftermarket coils that should do a good job and they only cost $67 which is much less than the MSD HVC-2 coils. Somebody else on here runs 4 of these coils and said they give a great spark.

I should have it all installed in a few days and will post back the results and pics. I have a gsensor hooked up with my wideband so I will do testing before and after the install and maybe that will be able to me if there is an increase in acceleration with the new setup.

Sounds like a good setup. Post results!

wait so the fc3s coils are better then the fd3s coils and are we talking fc turbo2!????

FC coils are better for the FD when you add an ignition amp to the FD, like a msd or jacobs amp, the FD coils do not last with a amp, the FC coils last.

I made some brackets to mount the 2nd FC1000 above my existing FC1000, see picture below, and I think I'll try to mount the jacobs C-4 coils off my new bracket, the one closest to the engine.

I also had to get new spark plug wires since the new coils have a Male/HEI coil "Distributor Terminal End" which is different than the factory wires that go onto the FD and FC coils. Others bought the universal MSD 8.5mm superconductor wires for a V8, well those are $80

So I just got two MSD 8.5 Super Conductor replacement wires that only cost $14 each, so it just cost you $28 for the wires you need, you cut these to the length you want, "Each replacement wire is about 48 in. long. They come with the proper size boot and terminal and also supply you with a mini stripper/crimper so the wire can be custom tailored to your application." part number MSD-34069 - http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku

All FC coils are the same.

my bad tom. it was late and not digesting. sorry i didnt help. there was an older thread with some guy talking about his basic MSD coil setup and amp making 6 inch jumps.. too late now anyway lets see how strong this setup comes out.

Check out the new pics, I just have to finish a few wires, will test out late tonight or tomorrow.

My new ignition setup did not make my car perform any better than it did with the one FC1000 amp and FC leading coil. So I decided to switch back to the one amp and FC coil and take off the extra 10 lbs of weight from the 2nd amp and the 2 new Jacobs coils. So it didn't help to have two amps for the leading plugs compared to having just the one amp for the FC coil for both leading plugs.

You should try the Fc coil and HKs twin power. Greatly helped me and others on cleaning up the spark.

tom94RX-7 10-27-08 04:45 PM

I am actually thinking about getting the HKS twin power since it works for all 4 spark plugs. But my current setup works well for the leading plugs, much better than stock.

arghx 10-27-08 09:24 PM

FC coils + HKS twin power and you're good for at least 500whp

Monkman33 10-28-08 12:35 AM

How much are new FC coils?

Are there any coils out there that would work better than the FC coils when paired with the HKS Twin Power?

IMO, keep what you have. Changing to the HKS is not going to give you any better performance.

tom94RX-7 10-28-08 08:39 AM

Thanks for the advice. I will probably do that. I was just wondering if the HKS gives any better performance because it also works for the trailing plugs, I haven't searched about that yet.

Unless you have very high HP, I don't think any other coils will make a noticeable performance increase, the Jacobs coils I got didn't really make a difference compared to the FC coil.

Mahjik 10-28-08 08:50 AM

The trailing is basically just wasted spark. The old "anti-detonation device" actually removed the trailing spark plugs from firing into the combustion chamber. ;)

The HKS is also older technology than the Jacobs FC line.
