stock engine -vs- prebuilt performance engine
 

alright, not too long ago i posted here and asked whether i should just buy a working FD with a decent or new motor, or just buy a good FD with a blown motor and replace it... well unless i find an FD that i like with a brand new motor, then i think ill go with the other route...

my question is, do performace shops like Petit or KD Rotary etc... build complete engines for the FD that are streetable, and not just race prepped? because if i were going to buy a stock new motor, why not buy a prebuilt performance engine? and if they do make them, do these engines have a greater reliability than a stock motor? i know about the basic reliability mods for a stock FD motor, but i would just like some info - if there is any - on these types of engines, like price and places to get them... im in Maryland, so east coast is preffered.

i highly recommend you don't get pettit...southern cal's rotory guru from rotary power said that he looked at petit motors all the time and those things sucked...he also told me that pettit doesn't even build their own motors and they get them down the street from some other company...i forget the name

thanks guys... anybody else? keep in mind that i want to use this as a frequent driver, not daily, but probly 4-5 times a week... would single turbo work with that? as long as i tune it correctly?

Where in the hell did you get that info? I hate when people pass on stuff that they hear from someone. If you want to gossip go to the hair parlor and spread your dirt. I just had Cam at pettit personally port and polish my rotor housings for me..Yes he uses a machine shop down the street to do his actual grinding. I repeat he does use it.His own people use it....aka his own work...Then builds and dresses the motor in the highly santized room at the shop.....This is not meant to build up Pettit but to merlely stop people from bullshitting others..Come on.We all love rotaries so we all have something in common.we all like our own shops and some don't like others..Having legitimate beef about someone is one thing(like many of our experiences with Mazduh dealerships) but don't fling shit for word of mouth.....Peace in the rotary world..I'm jumpimg off my soapbox now...G...

i concur 100%. that was a pretty blind and assinine thing to say, whether or not you have experience with the shop. i can tell you however, that the shop is not for the slacker. it is very clean and organized. they do build their own motors, and do their own port work. they do however use the machine shop just up the road. did i mention that some of the renntech work is done there too? i would recommend pettit to anyone. hell they had all the work done to my car in about 2.5 weeks........

and to answer the question.....i would buy a running rx7 just so you can assess the rest of the condition of the vehicle. a/c, gears, and other things. then do the motor work, and replace anything that needs it....

Performance Shop Engines vs Reman Stock
 

A good performance shop can do things to tweak an engine towards a specific goal. When I had Pettit do my rebuild (blown apex seal) in April, 2000, 37K miles ago, I told them it would be a daily driver, that I wanted them to go for daily driver reliability vs. ultimate performance at any point they had the opportunity to make a choice (how much to "port" in the street port I got, for example) and I've been very pleased with the results. Pettit has moved to a new location up I-95 from Fort Lauderdale a few miles since then (see their website) but I expect they're still doing good work. I highly recommend them from my personal experience. As you can see from my mods, I got them to do a bunch of other stuff, too, while they had the car and all was done well.

I would suggest you consider a rebuild from a good shop, like KD or Pettit or others mentioned often on this forum, instead of a remanufactured engine because you will get some increased performance and a "new" engine instead of just a "new" engine that is still "stock" in performance. Good luck!

I noticed you're on the east coast, so depending on where you are, you may want to consider www.rotorsportsracing.com out of Charlotte, NC. So far I've HEARD (sorry no experience!) good things about them, and since I'm in NC I'm thinking of giving them a try. If nothing else, their website has a good listing of prices vs performance mods.
