stock drivetrain and gearbox

how much HP will a stock drivetrain and gearbox for a 94 FD3S support up too before getting problems?

Define problems. hahaha

A stock FD will give you "problems" all on its own at the stock horsepower ratings.

LOL for sure ^^

Generally the gearbox isn't HP damaged, it's damaged by worn or breaking syncros. The diff. will break too easily/often above about 350 HP, but if you're drag racing all bets are off. It will break at stock levels if you get wheel hop.

What I'm saying is the gearbox isn't the weak area, it's the diff. when you worry about too much horsepower. Also, you can't really equate breaking parts to HP output, it's really how you treat the car. If you jerk the drivetrain a lot when shifting or get wheelhop things will break. First the diff, then half shafts. I haven't heard any drag racers on here complain about the transmission (other than syncros).

i have around 370hp right now and ever since i got the work done to make it 370hp when i try put the car in 1st 2nd it makes a whining noise and with some resistance and if i shifting real fast and maybe i hear a quick grinding coming from my gears and i know this is pretty common but i can only shift to 5th gear from 4th without grinding and sometimes it will anyways because i get to get my syncros re-aligned

actually when my rx7 was stock i had almost no problems i started getting problems when i started modding it.

As long as you take good care (e.g. putting oil and coolant and keeping it tuned up you shouldn't have very many problems besides if your racing it and then your pretty fine too

Change your gear oil. Put in a good Synthetic 75w90.

370hp? what do you have in your car? We need to meet up so I can see that baby (I'm near VanNuys).

Nameless i sent you a PM

austinsFD 04-12-04 11:50 PM

2 Bad words. Wheel hop

I'm on my 3rd diff now and I am finally taking steps to stop the wheel hop, diff brace and nylon mounts, along with all nylon suspension bushings and m2 toe links that I already had.

And don't drag race. Both times, on the rare occasion I am at the drag strip, wheel hop that I didn't catch quick enough.

As for the synchros and the tranny, get a B&M style short shifter or one of the jap ones if you like to waste money and you will never do an accidental 2-5 shift again. That's the big killer of those 5th gear synchros.

I recommind Redline or Amsoil in the tranny or diff, that's all I will run.

22 years SCCA nat'l racing, the last 6 w mazda. crashbox w quickchange rearend running from 7000 to 10,000 for 35 minutes. only one engine failure when we bumped the rear gears a click in qualifying at road atlanta and ran 10,300 at the end of the backstraight...

my point: i ran Mobil One synthetic in my engine, trans, rear end and wheel bearings. other synthetics might be as good (although they are all different as to composition) but i KNOW mobil one works.

it might be easier for you to get. i do consider it to be an essential for my fd.
