Stickin' it to the man: giving Automobile mag a piece of my mind
It's always bugged me over the years how every time in any of the widely circulated automotive magazines (be it car & driver, road and track, automobile, etc) they publish a 'best of the last 'x' years' list, they leave off our cars.
In the April 2006 issue of Automobile, it happened again. This was their 20th anniversary issue, and they published a list of 'The 20 Greatest Cars of the last 20 Years.' I don't have the issue in front of me, but you get the idea. The list included such luminaries as the Lexus LS400, Jeep Cherokee, and Chrysler minivan. This is a performance mag? Instead of being vaguely annoyed and shaking my head like I usually I do, I sat down and fired off an email. Well, I'll be damned, but they printed it! Check out the Ignition>>Letters page of the June 2006 issue :) "On the page preceding the list of the twenty greatest cars, you proclaim loudly, "No Boring Cars!" You then go on to leave one of the most exciting cars ever produced off the list. Where is the FD3S Twin Turbo Mazda RX-7? Way to drop the ball, guys (and gal)." Just thought I'd share guys, never expected to see that little piece of poetry find it's way into print :D |
So that was you. When I read it I felt guilty I hadn't done the same. Way to go.
I remember not to long ago either car and driver or road and trank doing that but they had our car in there. What mag. did they print your article in?
Im gad youre on the front lines.
Way to go! Now you can honestly say you're a published author =)
Yeah!
Stickin' it to the man............... I like it :D
If it's any consolation, since the list was limited to just 20 cars and three of those were a high price Toyota, a Minivan and a Sport Ute, our car MUST be in some pretty good company.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=2940 they called it.. fussy "Others have fallen into the hands of young motorists who possess more enthusiasm for the RX-7's blistering perform-ance than the skill necessary to safely handle it. As a result, there are plenty of these cars on the market with salvage titles, warns Nick Van Nugteren, owner of Rotary Reliability & Racing in Santa Ana, California, our other RX-7 expert." |
Since David E. Davis, Jr. left the magazine, it has never been the same. Ms. Jennings and her cohorts cannot hold a candle to Davis, and she learned the hard way by leading the magazine down the path to irrelevance since his departure (actually, she stuck a knife in his back if you want to know the truth....)
10 years ago, it was one of the hottest magazines in the country, now it's bleeding money and has been for sale with no takers. Good job, Jennings! So, go over to www.windingroad.com and get yourself a free (no bs, it's really free!) 3 year subscription and you will be able to see what David E. is up to these days. He's back and he's digital, and we'll all be the better for it. |

Sports Car International has run a series of articles on "best" sports cars for $5K, $10K, $15K, and $20K. The FD was in the $15K article. In a long-past issue, they highlighted it as an "affordable" sports car, which is a monthly back page staple. Frankly, SCI is the only rag of which I keep all copies.

Winding Road is terrific. Thanks for the tip.
sweet! thanks for the link.
I think it was this months Sport Compact Car's article where they listed the top Japanese Sports cars that on "must drive" where they listed the FD as 3rd, Mitsu Evo 2nd and the NSX as 1st.
Good job not letting them get away with a slip up like that.
thanks for stepping up
