Steering Wheel Play???

It might be my imagination, but a couple of times this past week the steering seems to develop "play". That is, I'll be turning the wheel and it seems like no response for several inches. It doesn't do it all the time, but I'm sure it has happened at least twice. Also my son had told me that the steering wheel itself would be off center when going straight - BUT not just one direction. sometimes it would be to the left and others to the right.

I searched but did not find (yet) any reference to steering issues.

thanks

The steering rack mount bolts often loosen causing this. Just tightening them with the rack in the proper position usually fixes it.

To see/tighten these bolts do you need to take the undertary off?

Yes. The rack brackets are just at the rear edge of the undertray.

Are these the bolts that I should be looking at from the bottom? The ones of each side of the silverish bands? Not my car, an old forum pix.

thanks
