steering rack rebuild/replace options

just looking for a solution to my steering rack issue. i pulled mine out and when i took the bellow off the inner tie rod, it was filled with ps fluid. i knew i had a small leak but this was ridiculous. im writing this rack off as bad. i would like to get it rebuilt or just buy another one but wanted some input as to what others have done about their rack problems.

The steering rack is really pretty hardy. I'd just get a good used one and be good to go.

When my steering rack failed, I installed a Maval depowered unit. I was never happy AutoXing the car without power steering, so I shipped my old rack to Maval to have it rebuilt. The rebuild failed a year/3000 miles later, but they rebuilt it again free of charge under warranty. So far it's holding up but it's been less than a year/1000 miles. If I had unlimited time, budget, and talent, I'd see about converting the car to an electric rack from an ND or Mazda3.

I rebuilt mine. Wasn't hard, just followed a write-up I got here.

not a refurbish...... a rebuild. a complete disassembly of the rack and everything replaced. i called maval and they said it will be 259 to rebuild it plus shipping both ways so im going to do that.

Just to update the thread since I was contacted about my experience. I'll copy and paste what I told another member in a pm. They specifically asked about turn around time.

Well in my case it was very quick. Long story short, I suspect them of switching parts on my rack or sending me a different rack entriely. I got a call saying it couldn't be rebuilt because it had a binding issue. For the 130k mi it's been in the car up to the day I pulled it, no such issue existed. They sent it back 2 day shipping and when I looked at it, the serial number was gone and the rack itself was in much better condition than what I sent. I have no proof that they screwed me over but it's just a little suspect.

I ended up having to buy another used one at 440 shipped and wasn't at all happy about it. I still have the rack and I tested it to see if I could get it to bind and sure enough it did. The whole experience has me a little sour but considering how he talked about a "shortage of cores", I wouldn't put it past them to have taken something from my rack to make a complete one.

That's just me. I could just be paranoid and completely wrong of course. I would say give it a shot and if they try to feed you some nonsense then at least youre ready for it. I highly suggest marking your rack in a very not so obvious way to verify you get YOUR rack back. They removed the serial number off of whatever they sent me intentionally. Mine was very firmly affixed to the body. It wouldn't have been possible for it to just fall off.

This whole situation was about 2 weeks from start to finish and that was mostly shipping time.
