Starting flooded engine = glowing dp?
 

Hey all,
just wanted to see if this is common.

I assume I flooded my engine... I foolishly moved the car 20 feet twice in a row, outta the garage, and back in. Forgetting about the cars propensity to flood itself...

Anyhow, I finally got it started after cranking the engine several times with the accelerator fully depressed and eventually just letting up.
The idle was really rough for a little while but began to settle after a bit. There seemed to be a large amount of vapor coming from the exhauist as well, 40f or so degrees here, don't think that was smoke though because it took some time to develop as the exhaust began to heat up and eventually that began to clear as well.

I let it sit to idle for a while and noticed a bit of smoke from the area by the dp (hood was up). I took a look and noticed the dp was glowing. I shut the car of again as that scared the crap out of me, let it cool down about 5 mins and hoped it would start again, which it fortunately did on the first crank. I'm guessing that this would be fairly normal, as the exhaust temps would likely get very high with all the fuel/oil in the exhaust. The second time I fired the car up it did start to glow again, but actually began to cool down and return to a less red color :)

Everything else seemed fine on the second start, no smoke, good vac, clean idle.

Just want to hear someone say, "That's normal, don't worry", hehe.

Sounds like there was just a lot of fuel in the exhaust. I would make sure all the essential vacuum lines are OK and take it out for a drive. Keep it light and smooth as well as at a steady speed like on a clear freeway. That should burn off the excess fuel, while keeping the heat down.

Might be a good time to replace the plugs, which might have a bunch of carbon burnt on them. Always helps after a flood...

stock DP? if so was the preCat itself glowing?


I have an HKS Downpipe and i have never seen it glow at idle. After a few 150+MPH pulls on a runway i did however see my turbo exhuast manny glowing bright red.
